These are our traces; pray for us,

And say: a deed reveals the man.

قيمة الانسان ما يحسنه

حكمة سار بها ركب المثل

A person's worth is what he does well—

A man's worth lies in his virtues

A maxim carried along by the caravan of proverbs.

Wisdom a caravan of parables has followed

مثل ذا فليعمل العامل أو

مثل ذا فليعمل العامل أو

يتنكب جهة كي يعتزل

يتنكب جهة كي يعتزل

Let whoever acts act thus, or

Let the worker act likewise

Turn to one side so as to withdraw.

Or withdraw to isolation

لا تباهى القوم بالمال ولا

لا تباهى القوم بالمال ولا

بعلو الجاه أو سبك الجدل

بعلو الجاه أو سبك الجدل

Do not boast before others of wealth, nor

Do not boast of wealth or of

Of lofty rank or finely crafted argument.

High status or eloquent speech

واعتبر ما قاله الوردي في

نظمه الحكمي اذ قال اعتزل

And heed what al-Wardi said in

His verse of wisdom, when he said, 'Withdraw,'

آيد تدعو لاصلاح العمل

In verses that, with God's leave, have become

To houses if God permits

Strong [wording uncertain], calling for the reform of conduct.

Tomorrow you will call for reforming deeds

فتدبرها أخا الفهم وقم

فتدبرها أخا الفهم وقم

بدياجي الليل واجه كالبطل

بدياجي الليل واجه كالبطل

So ponder them, brother of understanding, and rise

So ponder them, O brother of understanding, and rise

In the darkness of night; face it like a hero.

To the prayer rug at night like a hero

حصل العلم بأخلاق لها

حصل العلم بأخلاق لها

في الورى صيت ودع عنك الملل

في الورى صيت ودع عنك الملل

Acquire knowledge with virtues that have

Obtain knowledge with manners that

Renown among humankind, and cast off boredom.

Have far-famed repute in the world, leave tedium

وتفنن وتأدب واسألن

وتفنن وتأدب واسألن

منصفا شيخك ايضاح العلل

منصفا شيخك ايضاح العلل

And master diverse arts, refine your manners, and be sure to ask

And specialize, become refined, and ask

Your teacher, with fairness, for clarification of the causes.

Your sheikh to clarify subtleties

انظم الشعر وهذب لفظه

انظم الشعر وهذب لفظه

خدم الفكر وجانب من كسل

خدم الفكر وجانب من كسل

Compose poetry and refine its wording.

Compose poetry, refine its diction

Put thought to work, and avoid whoever is idle.

Serve thought and avoid laziness

واتق الله تكن طوداً فما

واتق الله تكن طوداً فما

ثمرة العلم سوى هجر الزلل

ثمرة العلم سوى هجر الزلل

And fear God; you will be a towering mountain, for there is no

Fruit of knowledge but the forsaking of error.

The fruit of knowledge is nothing but shunning flaws

واقبل النصح ودع طرق الخنا

والزم الصدق واياك الخبل

And accept counsel, and leave the paths of indecency.

Accept advice, leave sinful ways

And hold fast to truthfulness; beware of folly.

Hold to truth, beware confusion
