- أعيدها هيفا برب الفلقI recite her anew, slender-waisted, by the Lord of daybreak.
- أكرم بها من روضة لرقادHow noble a garden it is for repose!
- ألا قل لسكان وادي العقيقLo, tell the dwellers of Wadi al-Aqiq:
- إلبك رسول الله جئت من البعدTo you, Messenger of God, I have come from afar.
- الحمد للّه وهو حسبيPraise be to God, and He is sufficient for me.
- أَلذ سرورِ المرء ما لم يكن وعداThe sweetest delight is what was not a promise
- السعد تخبرنا شواهد حالهGood fortune—its signs tell us
- العز بالله للسلطان محمودGlory through God belongs to Sultan Mahmud,
- الموت كم فجع الورى وثباتهDeath—how often its leaps have bereaved mankind!
- الموت ليس بطالب متوانDeath is no laggard pursuer,
- إلى متى اللهو والأحباب قد رحلواHow long this idle pleasure, when loved ones have already departed?
- أمحمد قد حزت كل فضيلةO Muhammad, you have attained every virtue;
- إن عز من خير الأنام مزارIf visiting the tomb of the best of mankind brings glory
- انظر له تمت مغاني حسنهLook, his perfect graces are completed
- انظر له نورا بدا مشهوداBehold it—a light that has appeared, plain to see.
- أهل الحديث طويلة أعمارهمThose adhering to the prophetic tradition, long are their lives,
- أهني بهذا الجامع الشامخ القدرI congratulate, on this mosque of lofty standing,
- أيا عين آداب بها الظرف سائلO ʿayn—the essence of letters—about which refined wit inquires;
- أيا من سبى الألباب لطف كلامهO you whose graceful speech has captivated minds,
- أيلتذ بالدنيا منعم بالCan one at ease of mind delight in this world,
- بشرى الورى بالأمن بعد مخافGlad tidings to humankind of safety after fear,
- بقلبي على زي الصليب قروحIn my heart are sores shaped like the cross.
- بلد الخلافة في الجمال فريدThe city of the caliphate is peerless in beauty.
- بلينا بقوم خالفوا أوضح الحججWe have been afflicted with people who defied the clearest proofs,
- تلقيت من أخباركم كل طرفةI received every delightful tale from the news of you,
- جاء الشيوخ مجليا ومصلياThe elders came in first and second,
- جاء الكتاب من الحبيب مبشراThe letter came from the beloved, bearing glad tidings
- جبرت بإحسان لمذهب مالكThrough kindness to Malik’s school, you mended
- جزاك إله العرش كل فضيلةMay the God of the Throne reward you with every grace,
- جميل ظنوني نحو عفوك ساقنيMy good hopes have led me toward your pardon,
- حبكم قد شدني من عضديYour love has seized me by the upper arm,
- حقيق بأن أسمو على منكب الشعرىMy worth I prove when poetry's mantle don
- حكم المنية ليس بالمردودThe decree of death cannot be reversed
- حكم المنية نافذ الأحكامDeath's decree is binding in its judgments.

- حمدا لمكرمنا بأي عوارفPraise to our Benefactor for such bounties,
- حمدا لمن بجزيل فضل أنعماPraise to Him who bestowed abundant grace,
- حمدا لمن جعل الإجازة سلماPraise to Him who made scholarly authorization a ladder,
- حمدت إلاهي وهو مستوجب الحمدI have praised my God, who is deserving of praise,
- حيهم إن جئتهم يا سعد حيGreet them if you come to them, O Sa'd—greet!

- قد أنعم السيد القرشي بزورتهSayyid al-Qurshi has indeed graced us with his visit.
- قد نال ذلك أقوام مجلمدةStone-headed folk have indeed attained that;
- قدم لأهوال المآب متاباOffer repentance in advance for the terrors of the final return.
- قسما بمكة والمشاعر كلهاI swear by Mecca and all the sacred sites:
- قلبي على هجر من أهواه في ألمMy heart is in pain at the estrangement of the one I love.
- قليل فيك يا عبد الرحيمToo little in your praise, O ʿAbd al-Raḥīm,
- كأس الحمام المر دائرThe bitter cup of death goes round;
- كأنك تهوى أن عذلك ينفعIt seems you wish your reproach would help.
- كبرت عليهم إنها لكبيرةIt weighed heavily on them; indeed, it is weighty,
- كتاب كريم مشرق لمعانيA noble letter, radiant and gleaming,
- كحل بإثمد هذا الروض أجفاناLine your eyelids with this garden's antimony,
- كرم الزمان ولم يكن بكريمTime grew generous, though it had not been generous,
- كفاني من زماني ما أقاسيWhat I endure from my time is enough for me,
- كل الورى هدف لسهم حمامAll humankind is a target for death's arrow;
- كل إلى بطن الثرى رجعاهEveryone returns to the belly of the earth,
- كل امرئ ساع إليه منونهEvery man's death hastens toward him;
- كم رحيق معطر مختومHow much perfumed, sealed nectar
- لا بد من سكنى القبور فريداThere is no escape from dwelling alone in graves,
- لباس هنا الدنيا عليك جديدThe robe of this world's bliss is new upon you;
- لتحقيق برهان الوجود مطالبEstablishing the proof of existence has its requisites;
- لساعد هذا الدهر أنت أصابعYou are the fingers of this age's forearm,
- لطلاب ما تهوى النفوس مذاهبFor seekers of what souls desire, there are paths.
- لقد كنت قدما قبل أن يكشف الغطاIndeed, long ago, before the veil was lifted, I used to
- لما ارتقى أرختهWhen he ascended, I recorded his date:
- ما بين ناظر مقلتي وجفونهاBetween my admiring eyes and her eyelids
- ما مات من يبقي الثنا ذكراهHe has not died whose memory praise keeps alive,
- مسك الصلاة وأعطار السلام تليThe musk of blessings and the perfumes of peace come in succession
- من يكن في ضنى ورام خلاصهWhoever suffers affliction and seeks deliverance,
- نفوس البرايا للمنايا مناهلThe souls of humankind are watering places for death,
- هذا المنى فانعم بطيب وِصالHere is your heart's desire; delight in sweet reunion.
- هذا ضريح يا له من مشهدThis is a tomb—oh, what a sight!
- هذا مآل الحي من كل الورىThis is the fate of the living among all humankind.
- هل الحي إلا هالك وابن هالكIs the living anything but one doomed to perish, the child of one who perished?
- هلموا بني أمي إلى جنة المأوىCome, sons of my mother, to the Garden of Refuge;
- وإني وإن رام العداء مهانتيAnd if the enemy seeks to dishonor me
- وأي صلاة للإمام فسادهاAnd any prayer whose invalidity for the imam
- ودية الجروح في النساءAnd compensation for wounds sustained by women
- وعدت الذي يدعو وها أنا سيديYou promised the one who calls, and here I am, my Lord.
- ومجلس رائق من فضله سقيتAnd a delightful gathering, whose bounty watered
- ويشفي شفاء ثم فيه شفاء“And He heals,” “healing,” then “in it is healing”;
- يا إلاهي وأنت نعم اللجاءO my God, You are the finest refuge.

- يا راكب الأخطار يبغي العلاO you who brave dangers, seeking the heights,
- يا رحيما بالمؤمنين إذا ماO you who are merciful to the believers, when
- يا روضة الرضوان والنفحاتO garden of divine favor and fragrant breezes,
- يا سالكا في الأرض سبلاO you who travel paths upon the earth,
- يا عارفا منه فاح عرفO gnostic, whose fragrance has wafted forth,
- يا مثال النعال تفديك نفسيO likeness of the sandals, may my soul ransom you!
- يا مفردا في الظرف والإيناسO you unrivaled in wit and affability,
- يا من إذا عض الزمان بنابهO you, when Time bites with its fang,
- يا من بتوزر ضاق واسع صدرهO you whose burden has narrowed his vast chest
- يا من يجيب دعوة المضطرO You who answers the supplication of the distressed,
- يهنيك يا ذا الطرس كف محمدMay Muhammad’s hand gladden you, O bearer of this page;
