قدindeed نالattained ذلكthat أقوامٌpeople مُجَلْمَدَةٌstone-headed
قد نال ذلك أقوامٌ مُجَلْمَدَةٌ
لاnot يكسبونthey earn لَعَمْرِيby my life قدرَthe worth of قطميرِa date-stone's thin skin
لا يكسبون لَعَمْرِي قدرَ قطميرِ
Stone-headed folk have indeed attained that;
Some folks have gained great wealth and fame
They earn not, by my life, a date-stone skin's worth.
Yet earn for me not a speck or grain
ونابand made up عنfor قُبحِthe ugliness of آدابٍmanners ومعرفةٍand knowledge
وناب عن قُبحِ آدابٍ ومعرفةٍ
بِيضُwhite الدّراهمthe dirhams أوor صُفْرُyellow الدّنانيرthe dinars
بِيضُ الدّراهم أو صُفْرُ الدّنانير
And making up for poor manners and knowledge were
And missed out on morals and knowledge bright
White dirhams or yellow dinars.
For silver coins or gold pieces bright
