حُبُّكُمْyour love قدindeed شدّنيheld me firmly منby عضدَيّmy two upper arms
وافتقاريand my need لَكُمُfor you أغنىenriched يديّmy two hands
Your love has seized me by the upper arm,
Your love has held me firmly by both arms.
and my need of you has enriched both my hands.
And my need of you has enriched both my hands.
ياO جلوسيmy companions حيثwhere لاno جُلاَّسَsitting companions ليfor me
ثمّthen أُنْسيmy solace حيثwhere لاno أُنْسَsolace لديّwith me
O you who are my companions where I have none,
O my companions where I have no companions,
and my solace where no solace is mine.
And then my solace where I have no solace.
طابbecame sweet ليto me فيكمfor your sake عَذابٌtorment واصبٌunceasing
قَدْindeed لَوَىtwisted الأحشاءَthe entrails منّيof me أيَّwhat a لَيّtwisting
Amid you, my torment and patient endurance have grown sweet;
For your sake, unceasing torment has grown sweet to me.
it has wrung the entrails within me—what a wringing!
It has twisted my entrails—what a twisting!
شِئْتُمُyou wished كَيَّcauterizing فؤاديmy heart مغرماًlove-stricken
فانكوىso it was seared منكمby you بكَيّwith cautery أيِّwhat a كيّcautery
You wished to cauterize my enamored heart,
You wished to cauterize my love-stricken heart,
so it was seared by you with a searing—what a searing!
So it was seared by you—what a searing!
فجزمتمso you severed ليfor me فؤاداًa heart تَعِباًweary
عَجَباًhow strange! كيفhow يُرَىis seen الجزْمseverance (also jussive inflection) بكَيْby cautery (pun on subjunctive 'kay')
Thus you decreed for me a weary heart—
Thus you severed my weary heart for me;
how strange! How can the body be quenched by cautery?
How strange that severance should come through cautery!
أنتُمyou أَدْرَىknow best بماof what بينwithin الحشاthe breast
وانْطَوتْand have folded عنهaround it ضُلوعيmy ribs أيَّwhat a طيّfolding
You know best what lies within my breast,
You know best what lies within my breast,
over which my ribs have folded—what an enfolding!
And my ribs have folded around it—what a folding!
افعلواdo ماwhatever شئتُمyou wish إنّكُمُindeed you
كلُّevery فعلdeed منكمُfrom you عَذْبٌsweet لديّto me
Do whatever you will, for truly
Do whatever you wish, for truly
every deed of yours is sweet to me.
Every deed of yours is sweet to me.

قائلاsaying حُبُّكَyour love فيهمfor them كانwas غيّfolly
And when a censor, given to blame, rebuked me harshly,
And when a reprover rebukes me,
saying, “Your love for them was error,”
Saying, 'Your love for them was folly,'
قُلْتI said مَهْstop! دَعْنيleave me فلَوْfor if أَنَّهُمُthat they

I said, “Enough—leave me! For had they
I say, 'Enough! Leave me be, for if they
granted me love, I would not be alive.”
Had bestowed love on me, I would not be alive.'

They are my heart and my life, just as
They are my heart and my life, just as
they are my hearing and the sight of my eyes.
They are my hearing and the sight of my two eyes.
ياO أُسَاتيmy healers حيثwhere ماever أنتُمْyou أناI
وتنزّهتمand you are exalted عنabove الشِّبْهِresemblance بشيّto anything
O my healers, wherever you are, there am I;
O my healers, wherever you are, there am I,
you transcend any resemblance to a thing.
And you are exalted beyond likeness to anything.
فاكشِفواso lift عنfrom عَيْنِthe eye of قلبيmy heart غَشْوَةًa veil
واقْلَعواand uproot ليfor me صَمَماًdeafness فيin أُذُنَيّmy two ears
Then lift the veil from my heart’s eye,
So lift a veil from my heart's eye,
and root out the deafness in both my ears,
And uproot the deafness in my two ears,
كيso that أرىI may see بعضاًsome منof الحُسْنِthe beauty الذيwhich

that I may behold something of that beauty
So that I may see some of the beauty
before which thoughts stand helpless and speechless;
Before which thought is helpless and inarticulate,

And my ear may heed you, though
I have aspired to a station hard for me to attain.
I hope for a station hard for me to attain,

Then may I receive from you a favor that clothes me,
So I may see your approval clothe me
beneath the layers of earth, in the fairest garb—
Beneath the layers of the night journey, in the finest garb—
