What I endure from my time is enough for me,

And from its people, what lies rooted in my heart.

An age with no discernment among people,

It has entangled my kind with asses.

So an age that is, in truth, no age,

And people who, in truth, are not people.

I include them all and make no exceptions,

And I mean it, though I am not harsh.

And among them I am nothing but a stranger,

Though brotherly friends and comforters abound.

And were it not for the magic of drowsy glances

That captured me, my despair of this world would be justified.

With it, gazelles charge against lions,

And the thickets of the covert bow beneath their gaze.

For every heart bears wounds of theirs,

And in every eyelid they have a sufferer.

And all that is solid has melted at their deadly assault,

And all that is hard has softened at their doing.

So you see nothing but a lover struck down,

Enduring in passion what he endures.

And all of them, though they boast, from me

Have borrowed some small spark of love.

And who among men has been dogged by torment

Whose burden would move the lofty, firmly rooted mountains,

And has been burdened by passion with grievous hardship,

Along with treacherous harm from the basest men,

But this slain one? And no slain man

Is like one slain by torment born of drowsiness.

Nor are other blades like the blades of an eyelid:

    They wound hearts without touching.

Across the expanses of a moon-bright brow,

And a cheek whose roses lie beneath myrtle.

Through him comes incurable sickness; has a lover

Any healer but union with the beloved? May you be ransomed!

A gazelle whom no gazelle can match,

And a sun whose light clothes the universe.

Do I earnestly seek any but the Chosen One?

Is there any doubt about the best of creation?

From the noble Arabs, he shone forth when

The foundation there was to be set right.

And flashed through the black nights until

He made the faith manifest after its effacement.

And made shooting stars rise in the sky of faith,

What vigilance was theirs among humankind!

Thus the faith acquired a sound countenance,

And the thrones of truth's dominion stood established.

And unbelief, after its former might, became

An ally of abasement, doomed to obliteration.

How many a lofty palace he demolished,

And severed a body from its head,

With champions who make their foe submit in fear,

And clothe him in blood as a garment.

Upon them, as long as any singer sings among men,

Be peace at every moment of repose.
