فماso what حَالُهits state إنif كُنْتَyou are فيهwithin it تلوحshine forth
In my heart are sores shaped like the cross.
My heart bears wounds like a crucifix
What, then, is its state if you shine within it?
So what is its state if you appear in it
بُلِيناwe have been afflicted وكَمْand how often لكنbut كفىwarded off الصّبرpatience شرّهاtheir harm
وهذيand this لهاon its account يغدوgoes forth الأسىgrief ويروحand returns
We have been afflicted—and how often!—but patience warded off their harm.
We have endured much but patience is enough for its evil
And over this, grief goes forth and returns.
And for it sorrow comes and goes
فلوso if للفِداfor ransom قلتُI said البريّةmankind كلّهمall of them
فإنّfor indeed الورىmankind جسمٌa body وأنتand you لهfor it روحa soul
So, were I to say, 'May all mankind be your ransom'—
So if I said the wilderness entirely for sacrifice
For mankind is a body, and you are its soul.
Then creation is a body and you are its soul
