تلقّيتُ من أخباركم كلَّ طُرفةٍ

I received every delightful tale from the news of you,

And string them as a necklace around the neck of our evening conversations.

وكنتُ بتشنيف المسامع أكتفي

وكنتُ بتشنيف المسامع أكتفي

وأُكْبِرُ بشّاراً بما قاله جهدا

وأُكْبِرُ بشّاراً بما قاله جهدا

And I was content to adorn my ears with them,

And revered Bashshar to the utmost for what he said.

ولمّا نما شوقي وزاد تولُّهي

ولمّا نما شوقي وزاد تولُّهي

سَرَيْتُ لكم ليْلاً أَبُثُّكُمُ وَجْدَا

سَرَيْتُ لكم ليْلاً أَبُثُّكُمُ وَجْدَا

But when my longing grew and my lovesickness deepened,

I journeyed to you by night, pouring out my passion to you.

وما كان لي هادٍ سوى نُورِ حُسْنِكُمْ

وما كان لي هادٍ سوى نُورِ حُسْنِكُمْ

إليكم فلم أعدَمْ بقولكُمُ رشدا

إليكم فلم أعدَمْ بقولكُمُ رشدا

I had no guide but the light of your beauty

To you; and in your words I found sound guidance.

وحيث إلى المسعود كانَ انتهاؤُنا

وحيث إلى المسعود كانَ انتهاؤُنا

زجرتُ فكان الزّجرُ يستنتج السّعدا

زجرتُ فكان الزّجرُ يستنتج السّعدا

And when our journey ended at al-Mas‘ud,

I read the omens, and the augury foretold good fortune.

فَبِتُّ وما ليلي سوى لَمْحِ بَارِقٍ

فَبِتُّ وما ليلي سوى لَمْحِ بَارِقٍ

وإن طال من دهري تنفُّسُهُ الصّعْدَا

وإن طال من دهري تنفُّسُهُ الصّعْدَا

So I spent the night, my night no more than a lightning flash,

Though its deep sighing had stretched long through my life.
