ولَوَand if انّهُthat it يُبْتاعcould be bought كنتُI would be المشتريthe buyer
May my soul be your ransom from the affliction that assails you;
My soul is yours to take, to free me of this vexing blight,
And if it could be bought, I would be the buyer.
And were it something I could buy, I'd be the eager buyer,

And I am the one who, through staying behind, has fallen into
For it is I whose flaws have left me filled with deep remorse,
Regret—so woe to me if you do not forgive me!
Oh woe to me, if you do not grant forgiveness, my lord.

O best of those whose verse the necklaces envied,
O finest of those envied for their prose so fair,
So flawless gems scattered from them.
That jewel-studded necklaces scattered when compared,

And noblest of those to whose innate talent verse bowed,
O greatest whose natural talent was confessed,
And with his prose he enchanted minds whenever it was recited.
Whose casting of pearls enchants if ever cast,

And more delicate than the night-wandering breeze when it stirs,
More gentle than the passing breeze when it stirs,
In gentleness, and more pleasant to drink than al-Kawthar’s pure water.
More smooth than the pure water of al-Kawthar,

I mean the noble Muhammad ibn al-Faqih,
I speak of the resolute son of the jurist Muhammad,
Master of guides and exemplar of the clear-sighted;
Sheikh of the righteous, exemplar of the discerning.

And he through whose discernment and intelligence the sciences
And he whose knowledge and wit make sciences
Boast of surpassing the lovely houris and grow bold.
Seem greater than the lovely eyed houris,

The lesson longs for his exposition alone;
Loves no lesson but expounding its complexities,
And the pulpit’s steps long for none but him.
All else but the minbar’s platforms he does not love.

And when the veil of ignorance covers a difficult matter,
When veils of ignorance obscured some problem,
He lifts the veil from the radiant brow,
He lifted the veil to reveal an enlightened mind,

With a mastery whose least degree lies beyond
With a skill even war with spears and Judgment Day’s horrors
The War of al-Basus and the terror of the Day of Gathering.
Are too little to parallel its least part.
ياO عاذليyou who reproach me فيfor حبّهlove for him قَصِّرْdesist فماfor ... not
أناI عنfrom هواهlove for him المستلّذّdelightful بِمُقْصِرِdesisting at all
O you who reproach me for loving him, desist; for
My critic in loving him, make your rebuke brief,
I do not draw back from my delightful love for him.
For I cannot blame myself for relishing his love,
ماnot كنتI was فيهin it مُقلِّداًfollowing غَيْرَother than الهوىlove
فَأَطِلْso prolong ملامكyour reproach بعدafter ذاthis أوor قَصِّرِshorten
In this I have followed nothing but love;
I have imitated none but passion for him,
So prolong your reproach after this, or cut it short.
So cease your blame or make it brief from now on.

If you hear what I have heard, then I
If you can hear what I have heard, know that I
Have seen in his beauty what you have not seen.
Through his beauty have seen what you cannot see.

A pleasantry from him cheers you, as though it were
His wit brings you joy, as if it were
Wine in the palm of a supple, swaggering youth.
The delight of chatter from a cheerful drunkard.
ليسis not الغريبُthe stranger بأنسهin his company فيin غُرْبَةٍestrangement
بلrather مَنْone who برؤيةthrough seeing وجههhis face لمhas not يظفرattained
In his company, the stranger feels no estrangement;
In his company a stranger feels no estrangement,
Rather, the stranger is he who has not beheld his face.
But rather one who sees his face attains what is sought.

وسَقَىand may water سَلاَSalé صوبُthe downpour of الأغرّthe radiant cloud المُمْطِرِrain-bearing
May rain’s lightning greet the haunts of his companionship,
He has made his companionship as bright as life itself,
And may the bright, rain-bearing cloud’s downpour water Salé.
And watered a thirsty ground with ample rain.

A town where the gleams of his light shone forth,
A land in which the beacons of his light have shone,
And so it took on a smiling, joyful face.
Turning it into one of cheer and glad tidings,
لاmay not زالcease منهthrough him الغربُthe West مَشْرِقَthe rising-place of شمسِهhis sun

May the West, through him, never cease to be his sun’s rising-place,
The west has not ceased to be lit by his sun,
And may Salé, through him, be more splendid and more delightful to behold.
Watering it with more beautiful and brilliant scenes.

And upon him be a greeting of pure affection,
And it holds nothing but sincere affection for him,
More fragrant than aged musk and ambergris,
More fragrant than aged musk and ambergris.

As long as one who yearns with love for you says in prayer:
No lover in rapture has said as I say,
May my soul be your ransom from the affliction that assails you.
My soul is yours to take, to free me of this vexing blight.
