وعَدْتَYou promised الذيthe one who يدعوcalls وهاand here أناI am سيّديmy Lord
دعوتُكI called upon You مضطرّاًin desperate need وأنتَand You are سميعُall-hearing
You promised the one who calls, and here I am, my Lord.
I have called upon You in desperate need, and You are all-hearing.
وحقّقتُand I confirmed يأسيmy despair مِنْof سواكall but You لفقرهbecause of its neediness
وجئتُكand I came to You محتاجاًin need فكيفso how أضيعُcould I be lost
I have utterly despaired of all but You, for all else is needy;
and I have come to You in need—how could I be lost?
وناديتُand I called out والآمالwhile hopes فيكَin You قويّةٌare strong
وقَلْبِيَand my heart منfrom ضربthe blows of الذّنوبsins وجيعُis aching
I have called out, with strong hopes in You,
while my heart aches from the blows of sins.
وفيand in عَمَلِيmy deeds سُقْمٌsickness وعِلْميَand my knowledge شهوةٌdesire
وفيand in الصّدرthe breast رَوْعٌdread للحسابof the reckoning مَرُوعُterror-stricken
There is sickness in my deeds, and my knowledge is desire;
and in my breast is anguished dread of the reckoning.
أَتُطْرِدُنِيwould You drive me away عنfrom بابthe gate of فضلكYour grace سيّديmy Lord
وروضكwhile Your garden للعافيfor the supplicant الفقيرِthe poor مَريعُis lush
Would You drive me from the gate of Your grace, my Lord,
when Your garden is lush for the poor supplicant?
وكيفand how يُرىcould be seen ظنّيmy hope لديكwith You مخيّباdisappointed
وعنديand I have علىdespite طرديmy being driven away إليكto You رجوعُa return
And how could my hope in You prove disappointed,
when, even if driven away, I would still return to You?
وهلand is there لِيَfor me منany مولىmaster سواكother than You أرومُهI seek him
تَعَالَيْتَYou are exalted وَصْلِيmy bond منwith سواكall but You قطيعsevered
Have I any master but You whom I might seek?
Exalted are You! My bond with all but You is severed.
وأيُّand what نَوالٍgift غَيْرَother than فَضْلِكَYour grace يُرْتَجَىcan be hoped for
وأيّand what حِمىًsanctuary إلاّexcept حِمَاكَYour sanctuary منيعis impregnable
And what gift but Your grace can be hoped for,
and what sanctuary but Yours is impregnable?
لئنif indeed حَجَبَتْنِيhas barred me عنfrom نَوَالِكَYour bounty زَلَّةٌa lapse
تَلَظَّتْhave blazed لهاbecause of it منّيwithin me حشىًinnards وضلوعُand ribs
If indeed I have been barred from Your bounty by a lapse,
for which my innards and ribs have blazed,
وأَخْلَدَنيand made me cling منهاarising from it إلىto الأرضthe earth شهوةٌa craving
وَقَهْقَرَنيand drove me backward وَجْدٌpassion بهاfor it ووُلوعُand obsession
and a craving born of it has made me cling to the earth,
and passion for it and obsession have driven me backward,
فماthen no بِيَديin my hand حَوْلٌpower ولاnor لِيَfor me حيلةٌany means
سوىexcept أنّنيthat I نحوtoward الدّعاءsupplication سريعam swift
then I have no power at hand, nor any means,
save that I hasten toward supplication.
بإذنِكَby Your leave توفيقيmy success وفضلُكand Your grace واسعٌis vast
إذاif لمnot تُوَفِّقْنِيYou enable me فكيفthen how أطيعcan I obey
My success comes by Your leave, and Your grace is vast;
if You do not enable me, how can I obey?
أُسَوِّفُI put off بالإقلاعwith desisting from sin قلباًa heart مقلّباًwavering
وعَالَمُand one who knows حِلْمٍforbearance منكfrom You فيكin You طموعُfull of hope
I put off my wavering heart with promises to desist,
and one who knows Your forbearance is full of hope in You.
وقدyet indeed صَدَّنِيhas held me back عنfrom ذاكthat قلبٌa heart مُغَفَّلٌheedless
لهit has كُلَّevery يومday فيinto هواهits own desire وُقوعُa falling
Yet a heedless heart has kept me from that,
falling into its own desire each day.
عَسَىmay أَثَرُthe mark of العِصْيَانdisobedience بالذّنبthrough sin يمتحيbe erased
وللّهand God has فيtoward أهلthe people of الرّجاءhope صنيعُkindness
May the mark of disobedience left by sin be erased,
and God shows kindness to those who hope.
فكمfor how often سَعَةٍease وافتhas come علىat حينa time of شدّةٍhardship
وقدand perhaps يُرْتَجَىis hoped for بعدafter الغروبsunset طُلُوعُsunrise
For how often has ease come at a time of hardship,
and after sunset, sunrise may yet be hoped for.
