- أتاني في قميص اللاذ يسعىHe came to me in a lādh-silk shirt, hurrying—
- أتت رقعة القاضي الجليل فكشفتThe noble judge's note arrived and dispelled
- أتحسب العين أنها طرحتDoes the eye think it has cast
- أحن إلى بغداد شوقا وإنماI yearn for Baghdad with deep longing; yet I only
- إذا اختصر المعنى فشربة حائمIf he condenses the meaning, it is a draught for the thirsty;
- إذا تكامل لي ما قد ظفرت بهWhen I have in full what I have already won:
- إذا غناني القرشيWhen al-Qurashi sings to me,
- إذا غنى لنا أمماWhenever he sings for us at close quarters,
- أراني الله وجهك كل يومMay God show me your face every day
- أشتهى الآن أن أصلي على نعI long now to pray over the bier
- أشكو إلى الله أحداثا من الزمنI complain to God of the calamities of time;
- أقسمت بالله لا ينفك مغتفراI swore by God, he will not cease to pardon
- ألا موت يباع فاشتريهOh death that can be bought, so buy it,
- ألا يا منى نفسي وإن كنت حتفهاAh, O desire of my soul, though you are its death,
- البس أخاك على ماكان من خلقAccept your brother, whatever his character may be,
- الجود طبعي ولكن ليس لي مالGenerosity is my nature, and yet I have no money.
- الراح ترياق لسم الهم فيWine is an antidote to sorrow's poison, according to
- ألست ترى استراق الدهر حظيDo you not see Time stealing away my share,
- الشمس في مشرقها قد بدتThe sun has risen in the east
- الله يدفع عن نفس الوزير بناGod shields the vizier’s life through us,
- الناس اتباع من دامت له النعمPeople are followers of those whose blessings endure.
- الورد بين مضمخ ومضرجThe rose between saturated and drenched
- أما ترى الشمس وهي طالعةDo you not see the sun as she rises,
- أمثلي يا أخي وقسيم نفسيWould one like me, O my brother and sharer of my soul,
- إن العبيد إذا ذللتهم صلحواIf slaves are subdued, they will behave rightly
- إن العرانين تلقاها محسدةIndeed, you find the noble leaders much envied;
- إن كنت أزمعت الرحيلIf you have resolved to depart,
- إنما الطيف الملمThe visiting dream-vision is but
- إني ليعصمني هواك عن الهوىIndeed, your love sweeps me away from every other passion,
- إني وصلت مفاخري بأبIndeed, I have linked my glories to a father
- أوفي كلا وقتي قسط تألهI allot both my times a share of devotion,
- برد مصيفك وافرشه بميثرةCool your summer retreat and spread it with a soft coverlet.
- بعثت إلى رب البرايا رسالةI sent a message to the Lord of all creatures;
- تركوا المكيدة والكمين لجهدهمThey abandoned stratagem and ambush for their own exertion,
- تطوي بأوتارها الهموم كماWith her strings she folds away sorrows, as
- جاءت بمعمولة من جنس قامتهاShe came with a fashioned thing, like her own figure
- جادلي بالعتاق من صرف دهريHe granted me freedom from the vicissitudes of my days,
- خرسنوه وما درى ما خراسانThey made him a Khorasanian, though he knew not what Khorasan was,
- خطط مقومة ومفرق طرةStraightened lines and the parting of a forelock—
- خليلي أني للثريا لحاسدMy two friends, I indeed envy the Pleiades,
- دموعي فيك إنهار غزارMy tears for you are abundant rivers.
- ذات غنى في الغناء من نغمShe has a wealth of melodic tones in her singing,
- رب ليل لبست فيه التصابيMany a night I donned youthful playfulness,
- رب يوم قطعت فيه خماريMany a day I dispelled my hangover
- رعى الرحمن قوما ملكونيMay the Most Merciful protect those who gave me possession of
- رق الزمان لفاقتيTime grew tender toward my poverty,
- شربنا غبوقا والنجومب كأنهاWe drank evening wine, and the stars seemed
- طلع الفجر من كتابك عنديDawn rose for me from your letter.
- ظبي يرق الماء فيA gazelle—the water is limpid in
- عزمي وعزم عصابة ركاضةMy resolve and the resolve of a hard-riding band,
- فإن عصير الثمار الثجيرFor the pressed remains of fruit are pomace,
- فديت أخا يواصلني بكتبI would give my life for a brother who keeps in touch with me through letters,
- فديتك ما شبت من كبرةMay I be your ransom! I have not grown gray from old age.
- فشمت فيها اختلاس لحظSo I glimpsed in it a furtive glance,
- فللرجل الوافي جميل وفائةThe faithful man has the merit of his faithfulness;
- فهبك طعامك استوثقت منهSo, suppose you have secured your food—
- قال لي من أحب والبين قد جدThe one I love said to me, with parting now at hand,
- قد قصر الليل عند إلفتناThe night grew short in our intimate companionship,
- قضيت نحبي فسر قومI met my death, and some people rejoiced—
- قليل مجال الرأي فيما ينو بهLittle scope for judgment in what befalls him
- كلوا من التوت وأنشطواEat of the mulberries and be lively,
- لقد ظفرت والحمد للَّه منيتيEnglish translation available
- لقد واظبت نفسي على الحب في الهوىMy soul has indeed remained steadfast in love’s passion,
- لما وضعت صحيفتيWhen I placed my letter
- لو توسطت إذا لم تتركHad you taken a middle course when you did not give it up,
- لولا تسلى بارتكاضيWere it not for finding solace in my restless motion,
- لولا شغيل عافني بالقربWere it not for a little task that [held me back] near—
- لي صديق في وده لي صدوقI have a friend, sincere in his affection for me,
- لئن عرفت جريراIf indeed I have known Jarir,
- لئن قعدت بي قلة المال قعدةThough lack of wealth has held me back for a spell,
- ما لابن هم سوى شرب ابنة العنبFor a son of care, there is nothing but drinking the daughter of the grape.
- ماذا لقينا من القاطول لا هطلتWhat we have suffered from al-Qāṭūl! May no rain fall
- مرت فلم تثن طرفها تيهاShe passed by without turning her gaze, out of haughty pride.
- من ذا الوم أنا جنيتWhom should I blame? I myself brought about
- منية سابقت ورود البشيرA wish that outstripped the herald’s arrival;
- مواهب الله عندي لا يوازيهاGod's gifts to me are unmatched
- نهض العليل فقلت حينThe ailing man rose, and I said, when
- هب البعث لم يأتنا نذرهSuppose the warnings of resurrection had not reached us,
- وارحام ود دونها الرحم التيAnd bonds of affection, surpassing the ties of blood that
- واصلاه حر جحيم الحديدAnd the heat of iron’s inferno scorched him
- والشمس حيرى خلف غيم عارضAnd the sun is bewildered behind a passing cloud,
- وإن جاءك القوم في حاجةAnd if the people come to you in need,
- وآن لميت من معاد معادهAnd the time has come for one dead at a foe’s hands to rise again,
- وجدوا عود أبي الصقرThey found the wood of Abu al-Saqr
- وحمدا لمولى استمد بحمدهAnd praise to the Master who draws by His praise
- ودارت عليه رحى وقعةAnd the millstone of a battle turned upon him,
- وذي حسد لو حل بي ما يريدهAnd an envious man—if what he desires were to befall me,
- ورد الكتاب فديته من واردThe letter arrived—may I give myself as ransom for such a visitor!

- وريح تضل الروح عن مستقرهAnd a wind that drives the soul astray from its resting place,
- وصبا ذووه إلى جناب عدوهAnd his kin inclined toward his enemy’s side,

- وصل الكتاب طليعة الوصلThe letter arrived, a herald of reunion,
- وغدا ابن داية عندهم كمهاAnd the raven grew blind among them,
- وغزال لولا تميمة شعرAnd a gazelle—were it not for a talisman of hair
- وغزاهم بسوابغ من فضلهAnd he assailed them with lavish gifts from his bounty,
- وفات مداواة التلافي فسادهIts corruption had gone beyond remedial treatment,
- وقالوا للطبيب آشرفاناAnd they said to the physician Ashrafana,
- وقصر يوم الصيف عندي وليلةAnd summer’s day was shortened for me, and the night of
- وقلب شديد لا يلين لخلةAnd a hard heart that will not soften to friendship,
- وكأن فطنته شهاب ثاقبAnd it is as though his discernment were a piercing meteor.
- ولو أني استزدتك فوق ما بيAnd were I to ask you for more than I bear
- ولي حبيب الوذ فيه باوI have a beloved; in describing him, I resort to descrip-
- ومن أن تلافاه رضاك أعاشهAnd one whom your favor has rescued and kept alive,
- ومن خاف أن الهم يملك نفسهWhoever fears that care will master his soul
- ومن خاف أن الهم يملك نفسهAnd whoever fears that worry will master his soul,
- ونفسا تفيض كفيض الغمامAnd a soul that overflows like the outpouring of clouds,
- وهل يباعد عذاب الماء ذو غصصAnd would one who is choking shun sweet water,
- ويوم كأن الشمس والغيم دونهاAnd a day when the sun seemed—with clouds before her,
- يا شقيق النفس من خدميO my soul’s twin among my servants,
- يا صروف الدهر حسبيO turns of fate, enough for me
- يا عارفا بالداء مطرح السؤالO you who know the ailment but neglect the—
- يا من شكا عبثا إلينا شوقهO you who complained to us in vain of your longing,
- يا من له رتب ممكنةO You who has possible ranks
- يا من يسر بلذة الدنياO you who delight in the pleasure of this world,
- يا هلالا يبدو لتهتاج نفسيO crescent moon, you appear to delight my soul
- ياشادنا جدد حبي لهO fawn who has rekindled my love for him,
- يامنى نفسي وياحسبيO my soul's desire, and O my
- يجير على سطانه حكم دينهThe judgment of his faith grants protection against his sovereign power,
- يدبره ملك ماهرA skillful king governs it,
- ينأى فاشتط وأنوي لهHe draws away; I go to extremes and intend for him
- يوم كأن سماءهA day whose sky seemed
