يا من شكا عبثا إلينا شوقه
فعلthe conduct of المشوقone filled with longing وليسand is not بالمشتاقone who longs
فعل المشوق وليس بالمشتاق
O you who complained to us in vain of your longing,
O you who futilely complained to us of your longing,
Acting like one lovesick, though you do not truly long:
The lover acted, not the one longing.
لوif كنتyou were مشتاقاlonging إليfor me تريدنيyou want me
لو كنت مشتاقا إلي تريدني
ماnot طبتyou felt at ease نفساat heart ساعةfor an hour بفراقwith separation
ما طبت نفسا ساعة بفراق
If you longed for me and wanted me,
Had you longed for me, wanting me,
You would not have felt at ease for an hour apart,
You wouldn't have been content an hour with parting.
وحفظتنيand you guarded me حفظthe guarding of الخليلa close friend خليلهhis close friend
وحفظتني حفظ الخليل خليله
ووفيتand you fulfilled ليfor me بالعهدthe pledge والميثاقand the covenant
ووفيت لي بالعهد والميثاق
And would have guarded me as a close friend guards his friend,
And you would have kept me as the friend kept his friend,
And kept the pledge and covenant with me.
And been true to me in pact and covenant.
