لئن قعدت بي قلة المال قعدة

لئن قعدت بي قلة المال قعدة

فما أنا عن كسب المعالي بقاعد

فما أنا عن كسب المعالي بقاعد

Though lack of wealth has held me back for a spell,

If lack of wealth keeps me sitting still,

Yet I do not sit idle in seeking lofty honors.

Yet I am no less active in gaining virtues high;

ولا أنا بالساعي إلى الجهل والخنا

ولا أنا بالساعي إلى الجهل والخنا

ولا عن مكافأة الصديق براقد

ولا عن مكافأة الصديق براقد

Nor do I pursue folly and obscenity,

Nor do I indulge in baseness or ignorance,

Nor do I slumber when it comes to repaying a friend.

Nor cease rewarding a friend with kindness warm and dry.

أكافي أخي بالود أضعاف وده

أكافي أخي بالود أضعاف وده

وأبذل للمولى طريفي وتالدي

وأبذل للمولى طريفي وتالدي

I repay my brother with affection many times his own,

I requite my brother's love a hundred fold,

And I freely give my ally my newly acquired and inherited wealth.

And sacrifice my all to please my Master divine.

وما صاحبي عند الرخاء بصاحب

وما صاحبي عند الرخاء بصاحب

إذا لم يكن عند الأمور الشدائد

إذا لم يكن عند الأمور الشدائد

And my companion in prosperity is no true companion,

A friend is not a friend, that in prosperity

If he is not there in times of hardship.

Forsakes me when disaster and woes are mine.
