رعىmay protect الرحمنthe Most Merciful قوماa people ملكونيgave me possession of
رعى الرحمن قوما ملكوني
رشاa young gazelle قصرa palace بلغتI attained بهthrough him المراداthe desired goal
رشا قصر بلغت به المرادا
May the Most Merciful protect those who gave me possession of
The Merciful shepherded a people who possessed me
a young palace gazelle, through whom I attained my desire.
He erected a palace through which I attained my desire
وسموهand they named him معdespite القربىcloseness غريباGharib ('stranger')
وسموه مع القربى غريبا
كنورlike the light of العينthe eye سموهthey called it سواداblackness
كنور العين سموه سوادا
And despite his closeness, they named him Gharib ('Stranger'),
And along with my kith and kin deemed me a stranger
just as they called the eye’s light 'blackness.'
Like the light of the eye they deemed me darkness
