نرجو ونطمع أن نعطي مدى العمر
We hope and desire to give throughout our lives
إذا رمت أنسا للنفوس ولذة
If you aim to delight souls and give them pleasure,
برقة أنف أم بناظر أدعج
A flash of a delicate nose, or alluring eyes?
نظمت لكم عهدا فلا بد من عهد
I have made a covenant with you, so a covenant is inevitable
ألا ويك تيهي إذ عليك عقود
Alas! When covenants burden you
والله لا اشرا قنا ولا بطرا
By Allah, we sought no evil or injustice,
بحول إلا هي لا بحولي وقوتي
By His might alone, not mine, is any might,
بكاؤك يوم البين يا أم حاجب
Your weeping on the day of parting, O frowning-browed mother
أَحوال بالأقلام وعظ الأعاند
Advice for the stubborn with pens, and preaching to the hostile
لما دعتني للعلا هماتي
When my aspirations called me to ascend,
على م يلمن الغانيات الأوانس
The singing girls blame me for what reason, I know not,
لغانية كحلا يزينها العقد
Her words adorn her like kohl decorates the eyelids
بني سقاك اللّه يابا محمد
O Abu Muhammad's son, may Allah quench your thirst,
إِني لغير سفاح منك فاعترفي
I am not a killer, so confess
رأتني مجدا فاستهلت جفونها
She saw me gloriously, so her eyelids
أتتني وأعلاها قناع مزعفر
She came to me, her face veiled in saffron,
شرحت مقالا في الفرائض محكما
I composed a precise article on inheritance
أنهى صفاتي فيك أدنى وصفك
Your beauty completes my qualities, though you are beyond description,
مالي وللوهنانة المكسال
Why do I care for the languid and weak one
لما رأتني قد شددت محزمي
When she saw me tighten my belt
على القلب جل الشوق يسعى وخيما
My heart is full of longing and desire
لقد جاءني من بعد أرضي وأوطاني
After leaving my land and country behind
دعيني فعندي للنهوض عزائم
Let me be, for I have the resolve to rise
أللبدر جعد أم على البدر مطرف
Is the full moon curling its forelock, or does it dawn above the full moon?
لا تجزعي من منهضي ورحيلي
Do not grieve for my rising and departure,
مدحت ونبهت الأنام وذمتهم
I praised and admonished people and blamed them
عجبت لقوم أرذلين ركائك
I am amazed at wretched people who turn away
إذا حرم الله المدام فإنه
When God forbade wine, that prohibition
دعي ذا التصابي فالصبا غير ما مرضى
Let go of this coquetry, for youth is not eternal
ألا كيف طاب النوم بين الولائد
Alas! How sweet was sleep amid the newborns,
يا ذا المعالي والعطايا جد جد
O you of greatness and blessings, strive, strive
كوى بالأسا قلبي وأبكى نواظري
My eyes shed tears of agony, and my heart is aflame
خليلي إِني بالملامة وازع
My friend, I am averse to blame
مالت تسائلني إذ مثلها يسل
Why do you ask me when the likes of her inquire?
أبرق فنيق لاح أم بدر طالع
A radiant Phoenix appeared, or was it the rising full moon?
أيا دهر قد أيبست غصن شبيبتي
O fate, you have withered the branch of my youth,
الصبر في الملك الديان مفروض
Patience in the just king is obligatory
سل العلما واقرا القران وسائل
Ask for knowledge and recite the Quran, and inquire
العز ما يحمي حماه الصقل
Glory cannot protect one who does not guard it
أعاكفة ذا الفرع يا أم كامل
O mother of perfect beauty, tend these branches
من لم يتب قبل اهتزاز الباتر
Whoever does not repent before the trembling of the spark
قد أفطر السيف وأنت العيد
The sword has fasted while you feast
تيقن وإن لم تستبن فتيقن
Be certain even if unclear, be certain still
راتنا وقد لثنا علينا العمائما
We stood with veils covering our faces,
يسائلني قيس الفتى ومحمد
Qais and Muhammad, two young men, ask me
قد أكثر الناس في الشاهي مدائحهم
كثر التراقب فاقذفي بسلاح
أمن طرب أأم تجد اكتمادا
الصبر يبلغني المامول والجلد
تغنى حمام الأيك صبحا وغردا
حيائي وصبري رد دمعي عن الوكف
أمن أجل هم بالعتيمة طارق
حياتك والمتاع بها قليل
عرفن غداة البين صدق عزائمي
لئن زهت الدنيا بحسن غضارها
تضيق على الوهن البليد المذاهب
ماذا غفولك يا عبد الاله وقد
لحب عناق الخود فوق الأرائك
نفسي فدا عذلي إِن أسبلت مقلي
كم سابح في غيه عوام
عدلت عن البيض الحسان النواعم
أليثوا بتعميم الرؤوس العمائما
