1. O Abu Muhammad's son, may Allah quench your thirst,
The rain of the skies poured down on you.

2. O my son! My heart is devoted to you,
And my tears flow like scattered pearls.

3. As you lived in this world with righteousness and piety,
You have departed with provision for the morrow.

4. But the calamity you have left us with
Has shackled us in fetters tightly clasped.

5. And bonds of sorrow from which no captive is released,
How can that be when you lie in an infidel's belly?

6. Can we live and look upon a flower with joyous eyes?
Or see a sweet resting place?

7. I had feared its tidings would overwhelm me,
And I would be left confounded without resource.

8. But what I dreaded did not afflict me,
For I saw death enshroud the devout.

9. So now, after hardship and mourning,
I say to my eyes with weeping, "Gladden me!"

10. With your tears, for tears are a means
To the Judge, the One, the Unique.

11. If the religion of truth continues after
Death has cast it down, truncated of hand and foot,

12. Then no blame to me today for blaming
When my tears flow and my endurance breaks.

13. Abu Qais the jurist Muhammad says,
The progeny of Abraham at the night vigil.

14. My tears flowed as if
They were the spraying rain when hail poured down.

15. Consolation for grief is better than crying in sorrow.
Wake, O Imam, and be patient and determined!

16. For our brother passed away only in person,
While his effects remain in every valley and peak.

17. So I said to him, "O son of the generous one, he whom
The rightly-guided would emulate for guidance has passed away.

18. The exemplary knowledge by which one is guided
And its brilliant star after it rose have passed away."

19. You condoled, but I tried to console him, what consolation
When an ignorant one thundered, what thunder!

20. O you who brought troops of sorrow to the world,
Scattering the troops of endurance.

21. You condoled, so you silenced the Imam with a terrible disaster.
Did you not see what befell every follower?

22. You threatened Khwarizm and those settled around it,
And Minuf and Iraq and Badbad.

23. And the land of Oman, and Yemen, and Syria,
And its Yathrib, and the Zanj with trained voices.

24. Because you triumphed over Islam, you rejoiced,
And said you would destroy its pillar and support.

25. But he did not die until after dispelling the gloom,
And satisfying the sharp swords of every transgressor.

26. Do you not see Islam freed its era through him,
And the good were honored in every scene?

27. The whip was bitter when it refused,
Gentle like honey to those brought near.

28. A refuge, when the horsemen shook its pillar,
To it judgment would return in every dispute.

29. At its door like an army, between a questioner,
A complainer, and an adversary, open-faced after denial.

30. Not one of them but attains his request
With ease, not asking to be sustained.

31. In its crescents are noble moons who shine
When they behold its generosity and habit.

32. You see his son happy among them because he
Is a shoot of glory, towering in glory.

33. Thus any good root, its branches thrive,
So for Allah is a branch from a good root.

34. He was a servant of guests, attending to them,
A caring father whenever he wished to give.

35. O excellent replacement for the Imam, our Imam,
When fate shook with a tremendous matter!

36. He leads his armies against the troops of rebels
And carries them atop the mountain passes.

37. And who after you will execute the law towards him
And implement it on the chained prisoner?

38. And who after you will care for the destitute with his favor
And protect them from the transgressing tyrant?

39. And who after you will face Ma'bad or Muhammad
And Khadin and Abdullah ibn Ahmad?

40. And who, if fate grows dire with a great calamity
Will drive it back, or the bounding torrent?

41. As you would meet us with your face radiant,
The knowledge, justice and guided Imam.

42. Oh, would that I knew what spot contains you!
It has departed with glory and esteem.

43. In Nizwa? O Nizwa, you are blessed with his grave!
Or in Manaqi, or in the mountains of Hamad?

44. If you say, "Its burial grounds quench the heat" I could not
Be a dam to the sea of generosity and bounty.

45. But I never lived asking that exalted one
To meet you in Paradise, the abode of bliss.

46. So rejoice in peace and submit in peace, safe from harm
As your righteous fathers were kept safe and guided.

47. For your beauty in life and death
Remains binding upon me, and who rejects a brother of generosity is an unbeliever.

48. You gave and did not begrudge your life to me,
And your departure on the Day of Resurrection is ample provision.

49. So this is the praise of truth. If I am lying,
I should live, and if truthful, it cannot be refuted.

50. Alas, I must surely drink the cup of death,
Even if I do not find rest early in the night I will continue.

51. O you who gloat at the Muslims drinking
The cup of sorrow, may ruin be short for you, so intend it!

52. If grief for one of their time has overwhelmed them,
The exaggerators have lied about him with folly.

53. I reckon they think that when
A pillar of the religion passes away, none will support it.

54. But when they saw him prosper and increase in
Ferocity, and surge wildly, the doubters died.

55. Alas! But it yielded, flourished, and did not yield
To him except after resistance and harvest.

56. For he, whom there is no pride but for him, protected
The sanctity of Islam from every corrupter.

57. His island on earth became as if
Through him the moon in the darkness of night were black.

58. O Imam of guidance, we are as the sayer said,
"Come to my house to offer condolences for the master."

59. If it were possible to ransom the master from death,
We would ransom him with fine horses and curved swords.

60. But he endured with beautiful, predestined patience,
Since yesterday rules over the morrow.

61. And also, no living being avoids death,
And is there in it any eternal life?

62. Did not Muhammad taste the cup of death?
And no female has borne the like of Muhammad.

63. So may Allah bless him as long as a bereaved one moans
At his ruins, and sends prayers upon him.
