يبتن سجودا من نهيت مصدر

The forbidden lovers spend their nights bowing in prostration,

تريك بياض لبتها ووجها

She shows you the whiteness of her shining teeth,

ورد الكري به بعور سيوفة

Roses he brought, their thorns fresh

عاد الهموم وما يدري الخلي بها

The worries have returned, though the isolated one knows naught of them,

أحار بن عبد للدموع البوادر

Ahar son of Abd laments the first tears

وكأن نمرقتي فويق مولع

Roses are red, violets are blue

ضربا فلا تسمع إلا غمغمه

Striking violently, you hear nothing but his growl

يسنها آبل ما إن يجزئها

تلألأت الثريا فاستنارت

The stars glittered and were illuminated

إلى ظعن كالدوم فيها تزايل

To gazelles with graceful swaying gaits

ما بال دفك بالفراش مذيلا

What's with your tossing around in bed so late?

فلثمت فاها آخذا بقرونها

I kissed her mouth, grasping her horns,

كأن لها برحل القوم بوا

As if she has a longing for the departure of the people,

كأنها حين فاض الماء واحتفلت

As it swept in a flood, and wildly whirled,

أبت آيات حبى أن تبينا

My love tokens refused to tell us

ونحن تركنا بالفعالي طعنة

Through deeds we left a stab

إذا أقبل المال السوام وغيره

When wealth comes rushing in, spend it fast

هممت الغداة همة أن تراجعا

One morning you were determined to reminisce

وما مزنة جادت فأسبل ودقها

The heavy cloud pours forth its bounty,

ألا أيها الربع الخلاء مشاربه

O lonely ruins with vanished revellers

طاف الخيال بأصحابي وقد هجدوا

The specters circled my companions as they slept

بويزل عام لا قلوص مملة

A cheek unwithered though the passing years,

ألم تدر ما قال الظباء السوانح

Did you not know what the graceful sandgrouse said

على الدار بالرمانتين تعوج

On the abode with the two pomegranate trees aslant,

عافي الرقاق منهب مبوح

A gentle, slow breeze in wide open spaces

عفت بعدنا أجراع بكر فتولب

The bare earth was left to morning clouds after we left,

وريشي منكم وهواي فيكم

My feathers are from you, and my desire is in you,

كريم يغض الطرف فضل حيائه

Generous he who turns a blind eye out of modesty,

ولم أر معقورا به وسط معشر

I have not seen one mocked among a gathering

تقول ابنتي لما رأت بعد مائنا

My daughter asked, when she saw our water was far

يا صاحبي دنا الأصيل فسيرا

My friend, the noble one draws near, so let us walk.

ما لقي البيض من الحرقوص

I tried my best

من كل بذاء في البردين يشغلها

From every scoundrel in both lands who finds it

صبا صبوة بل لج وهو لجوج

The dawn glowed brightly, but soon turned gloomy,

فما برحت سجواء حتى كأنما

She had scarcely departed from Sajwaa before it seemed

أكلنا الشوى حتى إذا لم نجد شوى

We ate the roasted meat until no more roasted meat was found

ولا تهيبني الموماة أركبها

Let not the blame of men dismay me

ألباغي الحرب يسعى نحوها ترعا

The war-seeker strides towards it eagerly,

نظارة حين تعلو الشمس راكبها

When the sun rides high upon a pair of glasses

صغيرهم وكلهم سواء

Young and old alike, they are all the same,

إن ابن مغراء عبد ليس نائلنا

The son of Mughira is not our ally

صلب العصا بضربة دماها

The staff is broken by a blow that bloodied it

فإن ألائم الأحياء حي

For the blamer of the living is alive

أعند الله للبرق اليماني

Does the Yemeni lightning have, with Allah

ويدني ذراعيه إذا ما تبادرا

He stretches out his arms when they both lunge

أثم غدوت بعد ذاك تلومني

How dare you, after that, blame me,

يجرر سربالا عليه كأنه

He drags a train behind him as though he were

فإن كنت لا أدري الظباء فإنني

If I know not the path the gazelles take,

فليتك حال البحر دونك كله

If only the sea stood between us entirely

هو الطرف لم تحشش مطي بمثله

He is the one whose steed none other can rival,

إذا ابتدر الناس المكارم بذهم

When people compete in generosity, the long night

وخلقته حتى إذا تم واستوى

And I shaped him and when he was fully formed

كأن بلادهن سماء ليل

Their countries are like a night sky

يا ليت أني وسبيعا في الغنم

Oh, would that I were a dog amid the flock

من كل أشمط مذبوح بلحيته

From every coarse-bearded man with his chin matted,

عويت عواء الكلب لما لقيتنا

You howled like a dog when you met us

بها جيف الحسرى فأما عظامها

In it lies the carcass of regret, as for its bones

تهانفت واستبكاك رسم المنازل

The ruins of dwellings have come together and wept,

أو هيبان نجيب نام عن غنم

Or a noble sublime one who slept away from sheep

لا ينبح الكلب فيها غير واحدة

The dog barks not therein save one bark,

أعائر بات يمري العين أم ودق

Sleepless nights pass as my restless eyes wander,

ضعيف العصا بادي العروق ترى له

The frail, vein-riddled staff you see -

أمن آل وسنى آخر الليل زائر

From the family of Wail and the end of night a visitor

ألا يا اسلمي حييت أخت بني بكر

Be greeted, O Muslim woman of the clan of Bakr

يا أهل ما بال هذا الليل في صفر

O people, why is this night in Safar

ماذا ذكرتم من قلوص عقرتها

What ruins did you mention that my sword laid waste,

يا من توعدني جهلا بكثرته

O you who out of ignorance threatens me with your many,

تبصر خليلي هل ترى من ظعائن

My beloved, look and see, are there any young gazelles

تذكر هذا القلب هند بني سعد

This heart remembered the tribe of Bani Sa'd

إني أتاني كلام ما غضبت له

Words came to me that I was not angered by

أرى إبلي تكالأ راعياها

I see my camels huddling close, fearing

إن السماء وإن الريح شاهدة

The sky bears witness, and so does the wind,

بدا يوم رحنا عامدين لأرضها

The day we set out determined for her land

قالت سليمى أتنوي اليوم أم تغل

Sulayma said, "Do you intend to come today, or will you delay

صدقت معية نفسه فترحلا

Mu'ayyah's soul was truthful, so it set out,

لتهجع واستبقيتها ثم قلصت

I put her to bed though she still resisted

وحديثها كالقطر يسمعه

Her words are like drops of rain heard

إن على أهوى لألأم حاضر

The tribe of Hima have my heart's disdain;

يمسي ضجيع خريدة ومضاجعي

My bedfellow sleeps while I keep vigil,

كم من أب لي يا جرير كأنه

How many a father have I, O Jarir, who is like

ومن يك باديا ويكن أخاه

He who marches at dawn, with his brother

إني نذير التي ألقت منيئتها

I am the warner of her who pitched her camp

عوجوا المطي علي ذا الأكوار

Urge on the swift camel, you who bear tidings,

حي الديار ديار أم بشير

O dweller of the abodes, abode of Umm Bashir

إني امرؤ لم أزل وذاك من الله

I am a man who has always taught manners

تعاملني بغير وفاء وعد

You treat me with no loyalty or promise kept

سما لك من أسماء هم مؤرق

You have so many names, an anxious worry

إنا وجدنا العيس خيرا بقية

Indeed we found the stallion to be the best remnant,

سالا عن الجود والمعروف أين هما

They asked about generosity and kindness - where are they?

ظعنت وودعت الخليط اليمانيا

I bid farewell to the Yemeni blend,

عجبت من السارين والريح قرة

I marveled at the bleary-eyed and the wind was a comfort

وديت ابن راعي الإبل إذ حان يومه

You mourned the son of the camel herder when his day came,

طال العشاء ونحن بالهضب

The evening was prolonged as we were at the hillsides

وداع بلحن الكلب يدعو ودونه

With a dog's wail he calls his beloved

فتى يشتري حسن الثناء بماله

قبيلة من قيس كبة ساقها

وفي ناتق كان اصطلام سراتهم

ويبتذل النفس المصونة نفسه

أتى دونها ذب الرياد كأنه

ألا قبح الله الحطيئة إنه

كأن على أعرافه ولجامه

ألم يسأل الركب الديار العوافيا

قليلا ثم قام إلى المطايا

فلا يكونن موعودا وأيت به

فسيري واشربي ببنات قين

بان الأحبة بالعهد الذي عهدوا

ألم تسأل بعارمة الديارا

رأيت الجحش جحش بني كليب

إلى الله أشكو أنني كنت نائما

إني وإن كان ابن عمي كاشحا

فإن كنت يا ابن السمط سالمت دوننا

يا عجبا للدهر شتى طرائقه

إني حلفت يمينا غير كاذبة

وللسر حالات فمنه جماعة

أفي أثر الأظعان عينك تلمح

ألا اسلمي اليوم ذات الطوق والعاج
