1. Words came to me that I was not angered by
Though he who spoke them meant to provoke my ire
١. إِنّي أَتاني كَلامٌ ما غَضِبتُ لَهُ
وَقَد أَرادَ بِهِ مَن قالَ إِغضابي
2. A persistent slanderer, his neck thrust forward
As if a scabby mangy dog set on by mongrels
٢. جُنادِفٌ لاحِقٌ بِالرَأسِ مَنكِبُهُ
كَأَنَّهُ كَودَنٌ يوشى بِكُلّابِ
3. Of a band whose eyes were blackened with villainy
Fettered knaves, evil men of no repute
٣. مِن مَعشَرٍ كُحِلَت بِاللُؤمِ أَعيُنُهُم
قُفدِ الأَكُفِّ لِئامِ غَيرِ صُيّابِ
4. The speech of a man who provoked a people against themselves
Like unwanted beads in a worthless string
٤. قَولُ اِمرِئٍ غَرَّ قَوماً مِن نُفوسِهِمُ
كَخَرزِ مُكرَهَةٍ في غَيرِ إِطنابِ
5. Why did you not ask, may God guide you, about my lineage
When my sheep went to pasture before the fuel gatherers
٥. هَلّا سَأَلتَ هَداكَ اللَهُ ما حَسَبي
إِذا رُعائِيَ راحَت قَبلَ حُطّابي
6. I share out my fate while it is still on display
Since each fate is a bride in her wedding clothes
٦. إِنّي أُقَسِّمُ قِدري وَهيَ بارِزَةٌ
إِذ كُلُّ قِدرٍ عَروسٌ ذاتُ جِلبابِ
7. As if she were an Indian, her charms and her allure
When we met on the trampled remains of the encampment
٧. كَأَنَّ هِنداً ثَناياها وَبَهجَتُها
لَمّا اِلتَقَينا عَلى أَدحالِ دَبّابِ
8. A woman of mine, the spring came forth through her
Onto the lightnings that looked to burst into greenery
٨. مَوليَّةٌ أُنُفٌ جادَ الرَبيعُ بِها
عَلى أَبارِقَ قَد هَمَّت بِإِعشابِ
