1. My beloved, look and see, are there any young gazelles
That came from the valley of Anaq burdened with yearning?

١. تَبَصَّر خَليلي هَل تَرى مِن ظَعائِنٍ
تَحَمَّلنَ مِن وادي العَناقِ وَثَهمَدِ

2. They came burdened until you said they were not nimble,
Nor leaving home until the morn of the next day.

٢. تَحَمَّلنَ حَتّى قُلتَ لَسنَ بَوارِحاً
وَلا تارِكاتِ الدارِ حَتّى ضُحى الغَدِ

3. They wander at dawn while the camels are tethered
At every campsite, like horses tied down.

٣. يُطِفنَ ضُحِيّاً وَالجِمالُ مُناخَةٌ
بِكُلِّ مُنيفٍ كَالحِصانِ المُقَيَّدِ

4. They choose from the lush meadow, and the hunter takes aim,
Yaqub, with his axe and sharp blade.

٤. تُخَيِّرنَ مِن أَثلِ الوَريعَةِ وَاِنتَحى
لَها القَينُ يَعقوبٌ بِفَأسٍ وَمِبرَدِ

5. His quiver is empty as if its sides
Are the cheeks of steeds overlooking the saddlebags.

٥. لَهُ زِئبَرٌ جوفٌ كَأَنَّ خُدودَها
خُدودُ جِيادٍ أَشرَفَت فَوقَ مِربَدِ

6. As if the tethering spot where they tied them down
Is the milk of Dakhili, flowing and braided.

٦. كَأَنَّ مَناطَ الوَدعِ حَيثُ عَقَدنَهُ
لَبانُ دَخيلِيٍّ أَسيلِ المُقَلَّدِ

7. They circled about until settling as if they were
The tents of Udm set up around the shaggy mount.

٧. أَطَفنَ بِهِ حَتّى اِستَوى وَكَأَنَّها
هَجائِنُ أُدمٍ حَولَ أَعيَسَ مُلبِدِ

8. When they left the abode, they sped off with smooth gait
Through the palms, no weakness or scattering.

٨. فَلَمّا تَرَكنَ الدارَ رُحنَ بِيانِعٍ
مِنَ النَخلِ لا جَحنٍ وَلا مُتَبَدِّدِ

9. So I said to my friends, they are the living, so pursue
The maiden Horra in her litters, the daughter of Ma'bad.

٩. فَقُلتُ لِأَصحابي هُمُ الحَيُّ فَاِلحَقوا
بِحَوراءَ في أَترابِها بِنتُ مَعبَدِ

10. The steeds did not overtake us before I found myself
Yearning for their guide, stripped bare.

١٠. فَما أَلحَقَتنا العيسُ حَتّى وَجَدتَني
أَسِفتُ عَلى حاديهِمُ المُتَجَرِّدِ

11. The two haunches had slowed to a limping gait
With a journey that spared us from rugged terrain.

١١. وَقَد أَرخَتِ الضَبعَينِ حَرفٌ شِمِلَّةٌ
بِسَيرٍ كَفانا مِن بَريدٍ مُخَوَّدِ

12. When we caught up, we gave greetings
And warded off misfortunes with our hands.

١٢. فَلَمّا تَدارَكنا نَبَذنا تَحِيَّةً
وَدافَعَ أَدنانا العَوارِضَ بِاليَدِ

13. We confronted gently, not with hateful estrangement,
And brought ourselves closer to every embodied soul.

١٣. صَدَدنا صُدوداً غَيرَ هِجرانِ بِغضَةٍ
وَأَدنَينَ أَبراداً عَلى كُلِّ مُجسِدِ

14. They competed with us in eloquent speech as if
Competing with an expert guide holding the reins steady.

١٤. يُنازِعنَنا رَخصَ البَيانِ كَأَنَّما
يُنازِعنَنا هُدّابَ رَيطٍ مُعَضَّدِ

15. And we reached out to all who were alert
With sound hearts and seeking every aim.

١٥. وَأُقصِدَ مِنّا كُلُّ مَن كانَ صاحِياً
صَحيحَ الفُؤادِ وَاِشتَفى كُلُّ مُقصَدِ

16. When we had our fill of delightful conversation
And avoided the prying eyes of the watchful overseer,

١٦. فَلَمّا قَضَينا مِل أَحاديثِ سَلوَةً
وَخِفنا عُيونَ الكاشِحِ المُتَفَقِّدِ

17. We drove off the camels, then said to the singer
Of melodious song, born of the tribe of Qatina:

١٧. دَفَعنا الجِمالَ ثُمَّ قُلنا لِقَينَةٍ
صَدوحِ الغِناءِ مِن قَطينٍ مُوَلَّدِ

18. Woe to you! Sing for us a Hind ode,
And say to those who seek no frivolity, "Keep away!"

١٨. لَكِ الوَيلُ غَنّينا بِهِندٍ قَصيدَةً
وَقولي لِمَن لا يَبتَغي اللَهوَ يَبعَدِ
