قضاء من الرحمن ليس له رد
A decree from the Merciful, it cannot be reversed,
وما ظنك بالحلفاء
Roses are red
الصبر أجمل لو أطقت الأجملا
Patience is most beautiful if borne
الدهر ليس على حر بمؤتمن
Time does not spare the free man from misfortune,
ود وقد جاد لو أجادا
He wished well and was generous
لو شاء أن يذهب في صخرة
If he had willed to go into a rock
ولو جاز أن تحوى علاك وهبتها
If it were possible for your elevation to be erased, I would gift it away,
وكنت إذا ما حاجة حال دونها
When a need arose that was hindered
أشكو إليك بغائب لا يقدم
I complain to you of one who is absent, who does not come forward
إني من صدك في لوعة
Indeed, from your rejection, I am in sorrow
ألا عج على مثوى الحبيب وسلم
Come now to the dwelling of the beloved and give greetings
عتاب وما يغني العتاب على الزمن
Reproach does not alleviate time’s affliction
إن كنت تشفق من نزوح نواه
If you grieve for his departure
وكلفني خوف ابن عبدون ردها
The fear of Ibn Abdoon's son has charged me
حدا وما خفض في سوقه
He did not lower his voice in the market
ويريد أن يجزى بإحسان
He wants to be rewarded with kindness
أسخن عين قلبت طرفها
The warmest eyes have turned their gaze,
هل كان عند المديح علم
Did he who praises know who his praise stuns
بالله يا ناعمة الخمس
By Allah, O soft-handed one
لا أسأل الركبان عنك توقعا
I do not ask the travelers about you out of expectation,
عيشنا كله خدع
All our life is but deception,
وإن فارقتني أمطاره
Even if its rains have left me
يا ساكن القصر على غرة
O dweller of the palace in heedlessness
لعمري لقد هامت عيون قلوبنا
By my life, the eyes of our hearts have become enamored
وما كنهه نظم بطرس وإنما
Roses arranged in moonlight's page
انظر إليه في العصا
Look at him with the stick
ومنافق يبدي انفعال منافق
A hypocrite shows hypocritical emotion
الله أعطاك فتحا غير مشترك
God has granted you unmatched victory
أولئك قومي بارك الله فيهم
Those are my people, may God bless them
وليلة عاقدت عيني كواكبها
A night whose stars knit my eyes closed
وكأس من الغدر مخلوقة
A cup of betrayal was created,
إن السلاطين الذين اعتلوا
The tyrants who rose high
أما لهذا الشيخ من عهد عاد
Does this old man have no past or future days
وليلة عنبرية الأفق
On an amber night of horizons
يا من يعز على النجوم نظامه
O you whose system the stars envy
يا سادتي إن الندى
O my masters, verily the dew
يا رسول الإله هل
O Messenger of God, am I
إذا ما جهدت النفس أبلغت عذرها
When exerting my soul, I excuse her,
ذهبت بلذتها الفرص
The chances for pleasure have gone
يا رسول المليك نفسي تفوق
O Messenger of the King, my soul aspires
خاب من التوفيق لما احتمل
He who bears high hopes is doomed to disappointment when events turn out otherwise.
وكيف أؤدي شكر من إن شكرته
How can I give thanks, when if I gave thanks
يا مشرفا أشرفت مكانته
O you who brought honor to his station
إذا ما شرف الإشراف قوما
If nobility graces a people,
يا سائلا سفه الشطط
O questioner, how foolish your digression
بكل كمي يبيد العدا
With every guide the enemies are destroyed
أعددت للدهر وأحداثه
I brought a brother for time and its events
هل كنت تعلم قبل اليوم زرزورا
Did you know before today a chirping bird
كم مقلة من مقل الحور
How many bashful maidens glance coy
يا حبذا ليلة لنا سلفت
Oh, what a night we once had!
أنت الكرى مؤنسا عيني وبعضهم
You are the most beloved companion to my eyes while others
قد وعظ الشيب وناجاك بل
The gray hair has admonished you and whispered to you
وليلة طولها علي سنه
A night whose length seemed to me a year
إني أهزك هز الصارم الخذم
I shake you like a sharp-edged, biting sword
يا صاحبي رشدتما
O my two friends, you were both guided
يا حار يا ذا البر والشيم
O friend of virtue and morals
يا حار إن أمانة معصوبة
O hot wind, a trust bound to you
وورد جني طالعتنا خدوده
The cheeks of a blossoming rose have dawned upon us
يا روضة بعدت بها أيدي النوى
O garden from which the hands of farewell have departed
لقد خسر الساعي إلى غير ربه
The one striving towards other than his Lord
أما ترى النار وهي راقصة
Do you not see the fire dancing,
جناح زرزورك الفصيح
The eloquent twitter of your wing
هب النسيم هبوب ذي إشفاق
The breeze blew gently with tender care,
عجبت لذي اغترار واعتزاز
I'm amazed by one so deceived and prideful,
عندي إليك أبا بكر وإن ذهبت
Even if doubts take you away, Abā Bakr
من لليل يتألى
He who complains of the night
ذو الظلم في ظلمه يفيظ
The unjust in their injustice are rough
لا تحرجن فإنما
Do not be embarrassed, for
لله من لم تنم حزامته
The one whose belt hunger cannot loosen,
تقدم هوى أو تأخر نهى
Whether desire comes early or late,
أما والنجوم الزهر والليل إذ يغشى
By the stars and flowers of night when darkness falls,
مثواي في الدن مثوى الدر في الصدف
My abode in this lowly world is like a pearl in its shell,
ولو وفت الأيام جاشت صدورها
Even if the days were to overflow, their hearts
الوفر محتقب ومحتضن
Longing awaits and embraces me,
متى يقصد المرء في غيره
When does a person find fault in others
مطلت بما أهديته فكأنني
You reproached me for what gifts I brought you, as though
طوبى لعبد أكمل الفرضا
Blessed is the servant who completes the duty,
بعدت ليلة تولت ذميمه
A night has passed, turning away its breeze
لقد أودى بك العمر الأحذ
The stingiest life has done away with you
تخلفي صاغرة إنني
You fell behind, still young, for I
قران سعدين لا يحور
The happy pair's conjunction won't change
إن الرياح إذا ما استعصفت قصفت
إني أعزيك لا أني على ثقة
إليك فهمي والفؤاد بيثرب
يا مهديا أهدى المدى
عطون به حتى جرى في أديمه
مهلا فلو أَحسست لم تستطع
خطوب إذلاقيتهن رددنني
جاء علي بملهيات
وذي نخوة يختال ثاني عطفه
رزئت بمن لا أملك العين بعده
غرتك يا مغرورة النهاب
للدهر في نكباته تنزيل
كم نعمة سببها الهدهد
خربت دار مقام كنت تنزلها
وما سر قلبي منذ شطت بك النوى
أيها الساطع نشرا وأرج
وصاحب ما مثله صاحب
من البر ما لا يستطاع احتماله
حتى متى تستفزك الخدع
خل جنبيك لباغ
ما لابن ستين على ربه
وافى قد عظمت علي ذنوبه
جئناك للحاجة الممطول صاحبها
حظ الكريم وإن تطاول عمره
ومن كان في حكم الزمان مصرفا
