شرفت ببكر ثم أني بجاهه
I have been honored by Bakr, then I, owing to his prestige
غريبكم ليس له دار
A stranger has no home
زكاة رؤوس الناس في عيد فطرهم
The charity of people's heads on their Eid al-Fitr
إذا أحصيت أدوات الكفاة
If my tools of competence are counted,
ومعذر بقلت حديقة وجهه
With an excuse my lips said, “His face is a garden,”
القبر أخفى سترة للبنات
The grave hides the daughters' secret
وعمك أدناه وأعلى محله
And your uncle raised him high and low
أفدي الذي ساد الحسان ملاحة
I ransom the one who excelled in beauty and charm
قضى نحبه الشاشي نصر وحكمه
The grief of Shashi has passed, victory and his rule
إذا كان من عزمي التقدم في العلا
If I am determined to ascend to greatness,
أ بالري أثوي أم أسير مع الركب
Shall I rest at the watering place, or journey with the caravan?
يوم دعانا إلى حيث الكؤوس به
A day invited us where goblets stood
باكرنا وابل سكوب
Early dawn a downpour outpoured
من القوم الذين إذا استمدوا
Among the people are those who when asked
وقاض لنا أير أيد
A generous judge for us, strengthening
واتفاق حسن ألف
An auspicious accord once
كأنه فرعون إلا أنه
As if he were a Pharaoh, except that he
شعرك يا ابن المختار مختار
Lean on me when I'm not strong
والدهر رام ليس يأمن عاقل
And time aims, no wise man feels secure
قاض مضى لسبيله لما قضى
A judge who passed away when he had passed judgment
رعى الله أحبابنا الظاعنين
God guides our dear friends
خضم سخا وهزبر سطا
The clamor of battle, and boastful threats,
يا من طلعت طلوع الشمس من فلك
O you who rose like the sun from the sky's orbit
حل النقاب فراقه
He unveiled separation
هجو الخواري عندنا دوله
Mocking the weak is base
خلفت خلفي ضيعة ضاعت سوى
I left behind a village being eroded
عيون الناس لا تلقى
People's eyes do not meet
بعدت وما حكم البعاد بعادل
You went away, yet separation's rule is not just
وفى السحاب لمغناه وإن خانا
The clouds fulfilled their promise to the singer even if they were unfaithful
البطن لا أسلكه
The belly, I do not tread
عجبت من دمعتي وعيني
I wondered at my tear and my eye
مجلس الاستاذ عبد الله
The gathering of the master Abd Allah
وفت السعود بوعدها المضمون
The Saudi fulfilled their guaranteed promise,
صار قدري في الناس كاسمي عليا
My destiny among people became like my name Ali
معاد معاديه مهما طوى
However time obscures their enmity
تلك الجنان قطوفهن دوان
Those gardens, their fruits are verse collections
دار خداش جنة ما لها
The abode of Khadash is a paradise that has
أشاع فساده الفسوي نصر
The corruptor spreads his corruption, Nasr
مناي هواك لا ساعدت سعدى
My desire for you did not aid my bliss,
غر الأعادي منه رونق بشره
The glow of his cheeks vexed the enemies,
لا تنكري يا عز إن ذل الفتى
Do not deny, O Glory, that the noble youth
وخريدة تكسى الجمال لباسا
In a sleeveless robe, the beauty adorns the camels,
لله أي جذر يوم النوى
What root did Allah place in me on the day I was created,
إنسان عيني قط ما يرتوي
The cat's eyes are never sated
بالأمل الكاذب والخوف
With delusive hope and fear
ضربوا بمنعرج اللواء سرادقا
They pitched tents with spear standards,
يقولون سعدى أساءت إلي
They say that my beloved has done me wrong
إن فاتك الشرف الرفيع
If honor sublime escapes your grasp
يا مؤمنا يطلع شمسا إذا
O faithful one who makes the sun rise
أصون هدب ردائي ليس يجذبه
I walk modestly, my cloak attracts
لقد كنت زيرا للغواني أزورها
I used to visit those who were lost in passions
أجدك ما ينفك قلب محبس
I find you, whom no captive heart ever ceases
قرب السقام وبعد الأهل والوطن
The nearness of illness and the distance of family and homeland
يا خالق الخلق حملت الورى
O Creator of creation, You carried the world
تزم غدا للظاعنين الركائب
Tomorrow the camel litters will depart,
قد قفل الباب بقفل له
He locked the door with a lock of his own
إذا سألوني عن سواد عذار من
If they ask me of the darkness of one
كتبت وخطي حاش وجهك شاهد
My handwriting attests your radiant face
وجه حكى الوصل طيبا زانه صدغ
A face narrated the sweet union
وحسناء لا جنح الظلام اهتدى لها
A beauty to whom the dark's wing could not find its way
قالوا التحى ومحا الإله جماله
They said he was shamed and God erased his beauty
يا لائمي عنفت بي فترفق
O you who blame me, be gentle
يروقك بشرا وهو جذلان مثلما
You like him when he's gentle, though he's usually harsh,
يذكرني الحمى عهد الوصال
The fever reminds me of the days of union,
هبت علي صبا تكاد تقول
A morning breeze blew upon me, as if to say:
إن طلبت الإنجاب فانكح غريبا
If you seek fertility, marry a stranger,
كم شامت حين يلقى مهجتي قبضت
How many gloat when they see my misfortune,
مضى خداش وانقضى يومه
A vainglorious man lived out his days,
أتتني سليمى لرسم السلام
Sulayma came to bid me hello
خذمة الخصيان في العين عمى
Serving the castrated results in blindness of the eye,
عجل الله برء اسماعيلا
God hasten the recovery of Ismail
عجبت لطيفها أنى تصدى
I wonder, how can she be aloof?
يعقوب عمي وغير بدع
My uncle Ya'qub is unique and incomparable,
وما الأب إلا الأب ما عاش لابنه
The father is but the father as long as he lives for his son
رويدك يا من أغضبته هناته
Gentle your pace, o you who angered him
لو أنني حسنه أو أنه حزني
If I were his beauty or if he were my sorrow
بحر إذا ما نزفوه طما
A sea, if they make it bleed, rages,
وقلت وقد سمعت به لصحبي
I told my companions when I heard the news,
ما أنت بالسبب الضعيف وإنما
You are not the weak cause, but rather
أما إنها الأيام تأسو وتجرح
The days inflict pain and wound us,
أعلي قد وافى كتابك فانطفا
Your letter has arrived, so it has removed
يشقى المعيل بقلب ضيق كمدا
The miserly man leads a wretched life with a narrow heart,
أوالدتي بعدت على التداني
My children, you have gone far from me
شعري يعلو الشعري برتبته
My poetry ascends poetry to its rank
وما أنس لا أنس يوم الرحيل
I will not forget, I will not forget the day of departure
لا ترج خيرا شاملا في البشر
Do not hope for widespread good among people
قم فاسقني الراح التي ثغرها
Rise and serve me the wine whose lips
وأقرع طياش الدماغ سفيه
The foolish one whose head rattles
أيا من ليس محتفلا ببأسي
O you who don't celebrate my affliction
وشادن ليس يهواني وأهواه
My longing does not make me weak, though it pains me,
يا شمس والشمس لها حاجب
O sun, though the sun has an eyelid
بعدت فعاد جديد بالي باليا
You went away, so my state returned anew
لي في الشجاعة سهم ما ضربت به
My skillful archery is unmatched;
قلبي لعهد السرور ناس
My heart yearns for the days of joy
سيدي قد ظننت فيك جميلا
My master, I thought good of you,
وشادن قد بكى عشقا فأعجبني
A lover wept, to me the weeping's like
ومهمه يتراءى آله لججا
A task appears as turbulent seas
لقد كنت أعرف بابن الحسن
I used to be known as the son of Al-Hasan
ولما غادر الحدثان شلوي
When youth left Shalawi
إذا الفجار أطغاهم غناهم
When the wicked become arrogant through wealth
قل لهارون قد علاك اصفرار
Tell Haroun his jaundice betrays
حبا من تحت ذيل الحبي
A love from beneath the tail of fate
رعى الله عهد حبيب ظعن
May God protect the covenant of a beloved friend
لم يبك مخلوق لمقتل أحمد
No creature wept at Ahmed's death
صبرا جميلا فلعل أو عسى
Show beautiful patience, perhaps or maybe
زمان الصبا موسم للتصابي
The days of youth are a season for folly
عشقت لشقوتي رشأ رشيقا
I fell in love with a graceful gazelle
أضنى الهوى جسدي وأكسف بالي
Love has made my body frail and clothed it in mourning
أقول له ولم أنفس بنفسي
I say to him though I did not pant with exertion,
كليني لهم يمتري الدمع ناكب
My tears flow for them, bent down
زعيم خوار الزي عجل ونطقه
The leader of the worthless, he's a calf and his speech
أتبكي حسرة وأنا المعنى
Do you weep in sorrow while I am meaning itself
أنا من صدمة النوائب قاس
I'm worn from misfortune's blows - forbearing,
يا صخر ما بك هزة لندى
O rock, no dew can make you quiver,
علا همما فليس يهش إلا
He raised his ambitions, so he only fears
وأشرقني الجريض فلا قريض
The wound left me shining, without a bandage,
ظهرت على قمم البروج ثلوج
Snow appeared on the peaks of towers
لبس الشتاء من الجليد جلودا
Winter donned coats of ice,
كالمشرفي إذا أغمدت في فرشي
Like a sword when sheathed in its scabbard,
غدا أحل عن الأوتاد أطنابي
Tomorrow I will loosen the strings of my oud
أراك مستعجلا يا حادي الإبل
I see you in a hurry, O camel driver
خل جرجان وخيم أينما
Pitch your tent wherever you please
ولقد جذبت إلي عقرب صدغها
I drew close a scorpion, stinger poised,
وليل دجوجي كأن صباحه
A night as though its dawn
علي بها مدخنة بند
Bring it to me smoky with coals
ما بال هذا الفلك الجاني
What is with this unjust fate
أعوذ بالله من سحاقة ملكت
I seek refuge in Allah from a debaucher who
سلام على سادة قد جرى
Greetings to masters who have attained
أقبل من كندر مسيخرة
A youth from Kindar came mocking ill-omen,
إن كان إبليس لإبلاسه
If Iblis is called so for his despair
فديتك جار علي الفراق
I ransom you, neighbor, although separation weighs heavily upon me,
تعال نندب مع ورق الغضا
Come let us lament with the verdure
ما نطفة من حب مزن
A seed of love we planted
وسقت الركائب حتى أنخن
I was led to sadness until I wept
شغلت بسمعاني مرو مسامعي
I occupied my hearing with a flowing spring,
يا حادي العير رفقا بالقوارير
O guide of the camels, be gentle with the vessels
ولست أستبدع ما نابني
I do not claim what has reached me
إذا علا رذل ولم يدل في ال
If an ignoble man rises high and does not strengthen his ascent with virtues and solid proofs,
يا صاحبي سلا فؤادي هل سلا
My friend, my heart asks: Have you asked
قل للذي يبتغي جاهي ومنزلتي
Say to him who seeks my glory and my high place,
جاد الزمان وكان ذا بخل بها
Time passed by stingily withholding her from me
أقوت معاهدهم وشط الوادي
I fulfilled their covenant and the valley overflowed
يا قوم إني رجل فاضل
O people, I am a virtuous man
فترت لواحظك المراض ولم تزل
Your glances ceased not to give pain,
ما أنس لا أنسه والبين جد به
I do not forget what I do not forget, though distance parts us
كم من فتى نابه الأخطار ألحقه
How many a youth of daring deeds is ranked
يا طيب ليلتنا بصحبة غادة
Oh beautiful night with a graceful companion
أمولاي قل لي لم أضعت خريدة
My wealth, tell me why did you put forth a purchase
أفدي غزالا مفرطا في الخلاف
I ransom a gazelle, so unique in its elegance
حمل العصا للمبتلى
The staff's burden for the afflicted one
وأصلخ في منفذي سمعه
A valve of total deafness
أنت الذي أوليتني مننا
You are the one who bestowed blessings upon me
تقول سليمى والمشيب قناعها
The silver locks now ornament Sulayma’s head
شرب المحرم في المحرم سنة
Drinking wine in Muharram is recommended
ألا سقيت أطلال ليلى وإن عفت
Alas! The ruins of Layla's abode are now watered though her lovely singers are gone and her time has passed.
حوى أبو الفضل ما كنوه به
Abu al-Fadl embodied the perfection I yearned for-
بدر يهز التثني في غلالته
أطلعت يا قمري على بصري
أقول لمرجحن الغيم لما
لا يشرف الرذل بأن يكتسي
عراني زكام فابتلاني مكرها
سكبزنا لا يزال مفتخرا
فلان بغضه فرض
أهجو متاعي بألف بيت
حبيبي معرض عني مول
قد أسبلت راحة المنايا
سرنا ومرآة الزمان بحالها
وإني لأهوى لسع أصداغك التي
لو كان يدرى بأي برج
ألا رب مولى غرني من عهوده
يا نحس يا كيوان فعلك كله
كبت بيبغو دولة
تجاوزت حد الظلم يا زحل الذي
عشنا إلى أن رأينا في الهوى عجبا
أف من دهر رآني
ارغب بسمعك عن مقال اللاحى
أتاني كتاب جامع كل طرفة
فتى ما به سقم وتعلوه صفرة
قد قلت لما فاق خط عذاره
برى جسدي حب العلا فتهدمت
لرجله عندي يد إذ خطت
نفسي فداء لذي حفاظ
يمر علي زمان الربيع
تذكر نجدا فحن ادكارا
لله أي فتى أقل رداءه
كوى جوف قلبي لف صدغ مشابه
أشكو إلى الله أني في سواسية
وساق سقاني في أرق زجاجة
أصبحت عبدا لشمس
ينصف القرن فيرتد زكا عن
ولقد تمنيت الجواب فقيل مه
جرح جحر ابن غالب ليس يوسى
يا أهل جرجان عفاء على
فدتك النفس يا قمري وشمسي
غريرة بعد لم تكعب ودايتها
فرعت ذؤابة المجد المنيف
أقول والقلب له وقدة
لقد ظلم القمري إذ ناح باكيا
طاب العميد الكندري شمائلا
يا جاهلا عاب شعري
وافرح فما يلقى لسدك هادم
أفاطم يا ترب النجوم تركتني
أنت الذي نقض الميثاق ليس أنا
وبيض جوار صعدن السطوح
بزني دهري اللئيم كريما
طوى المنون الحسنا
بعت عبدا كان لي سكنا
إذا اقتبس الهلال النور منه
هأنذا ثاويا بمضيعة
كم راكب لم يترجل ماشيا
