الحمد لله إذ لم يأتني أجلي
Praise be to Allah, for my time has not yet come
وعبد يغوث تحجل الطير حوله
And the birds circle around the slave of succor
وإني لآتي ما أتيت وإنني
Though I arrive where once I came before
يسعى خزيمة في قوم ليهلكهم
Khuzaymah strives among a people to destroy them
ألم تتنقثها ابن قيس بن مالك
Have you not made careful note of it, O son of Qais son of Malik,
تقوت أفراسهم بناتهم
Their horses are fed by their daughters
عفا الرسم أم لا بعد حول تجرما
Has the drawing forgiven, or not, after a year of sin?
طلل لخولة بالرسيس قديم
A ruin Khawlah left in the sand
أرى النفس لجت في رجاء مكذب
I see the soul yearning in denied hope,
معاقلنا التي نأوي إليها
Our fortresses to which we retreat
بدلن بعد النفش الوجيفا
After languor and sultry heat of summer
وأخلف في ربوع عن ربوع
And left behind in gardens from gardens
عرفت المنزل الخالي
I knew the empty house
عن الراكب المتروك آخر عهده
Of the abandoned rider, in his final days
درس المنا بمتالع فأبان
The stars taught with an observer, thus made clear
ألا ذهب المحافظ والمحامي
Alas, the guardian and the lawyer are gone,
يا عامر بن مالك يا عما
O Amir son of Malik, O uncle
قومي إذا نام الخلي
Arise when the protector sleeps
إن تقوى ربنا خير نفل
The piety of our Lord is the best supererogation
عفت الديار محلها فمقامها
The dwellings are deserted, though their place remains;
أقول لصاحبي بذات غسل
I say to my companion in a place of washing,
لمن طلل تضمنه أثال
For whom is a ruined abode which includes meadows,
إني امرؤ من مالك بن جعفر
I am a man of Malik bin Ja'far
يا قوم هل أحسستم جساسا
O people, have you felt a spy
أعاذل قومي فاعذلي الآن أو ذري
I blamed my people, so blame me now or leave me be,
لعمري لئن كان المخبر صادقا
By my life! If the informer spoke truthfully,
ولم تحم عبد الله لا در درها
Abdullah's servant did not protect, her pearls no longer glisten
يا بشر بشر إياد أيكم
O harbinger of good news of Iyad, which of you
طرب الفؤاد وليته لم يطرب
My heart was troubled, would that it had not been troubled,
فاخرتني بيشكر بن بكر
You boast to me of Yashkur son of Bakr,
فيا عجبا كيف يعصى الإله
Oh wonder, how is God disobeyed
من يبسط الله عليه إصبعا
He whose finger God extends
إذا ما هتفنا هتفة في ندينا
When we called out in our valley,
هل تعرف الدار بسفح الشرببه
Do you know the house at the foot of Sharbbah,
أبكي أبا الحزاز يوم مقامة
I weep for Abu Al-Hazzaz on a day of standing
يا هرم ابن الأكرمين منصبا
O pyramid, son of the most noble fathers appointed
غشيت ديار الحي بالسبعان
I roamed the abodes of Hayy with two swords
أمرعت في نداه إذ قحط القط
The rain poured down when the cat suffered drought,
ولدت بنو حرثان فرخ محرق
The sons of Hurthan bore a blazing torch
لم أر مثلك يا أمام خليلا
I have not seen the like of you, O Imam Khalil
أتونا بشهران العريضة كلها
We came with the two wide months in their entirety,
وأنك ما يعطيكه الله تلقه
What God grants is met with toil ere it is thine,
أثبي في البلاد بذكر زيد
I praise Zayd in the lands
لما دعاني عامر لأسبهم
When Aamir called me to revile them
كما لاح عنوان مبروزة
As the title of a prominent work shines forth,
نوائب من خير وشر كليهما
The fates of good and evil change by turns,
فإن تك غبراء الجنينة أصبحت
The once-dusty cheeks of the young lady are now rosy,
تمنى ابنتاي أن يعيش أبوهما
My daughters wished their father lived
قامت تشكى إلي الموت مجهشة
She arose complaining, and to me death seemed near,
يكبون العشار لمن أتاهم
They pour out tribute to whoever comes to them
إسق هذا وذا وذاك وعلق
Pour this, that, and the other, and hang [the cups]
كبيشة حلت بعد عهدك عاقلا
Kubaysha regained her sense after you left,
راح القطين بهجر بعدما ابتكروا
The two cats departed after scheming,
لست بغافر لبني بغيض
I do not forgive the sons of hated enmity
وضحت بالحيز والدريم
She came into view, bright in her space,
لم تبين عن أهلها الأطلال
The ruins did not reveal anything about their people
لا تزجر الفتيان عن سوء الرعه
Do not chide the youths for their mischief,
بلينا وما تبلى النجوم الطوالع
We wither, though the stars that guide do not
يا مي قومي في المآتم واندبي
O Mayya, arise and lament in assemblies
انع الكريم للكريم أربدا
The generous man gives freely to the noble
فبتنا حيث أمسينا قريبا
So we spent the night where evening found us,
قضي الأمور وأنجز الموعود
The matters have been decided and the promises fulfilled,
لله نافلة الأجل الأفضل
For Allah is the best bonus of life
بكتنا أرضنا لما ظعنا
Our land wept when we were estranged
لما أتاني عن طفيل ورهطه
When the news of Tufayl and his company came to me
كانت قناتي لا تلين لغامز
My bow would not bend to any teaser
ربيع لا يسقك نحوي سائق
Springtime does not guide you to me as a driver
دعي اللوم أو بيني كشق صديع
Leave blame aside or split me like a cracked jug,
رأتني قد شحبت وسل جسمي
She saw me grow pale and my body waste away,
يا دار سلمى خلاء لا أكلفها
O my empty house of peace, I ask of you
وما يدري عبيد بني أقيش
And Ubaid, son of Uqaysh, does not know
كأن دمائهم تجري كميتا
As though their blood was flowing in streams
أصبحت أمشي بعد سلمى بن مالك
I walk now after Salma son of Malik
والناس يلحون الأمير إذا هم
When people persistently urge the prince though they
لهند بأعلام الأغر رسوم
Hind has marks of beauty upon her face,
ما إن تعري المنون من أحد
When death strips a man of loved ones dear,
يا ضمر يا عبد بني كلاب
O ignoble slave, son of dogs,
أنبئت أن أبا حنيف
I was told that Abu Hanifa
الكلب والشاعر في منزل
The dog and the poet in a house
قوما تجوبان مع الأنواح
People wandering with plaintive laments
كأني وقد خلفت تسعين حجة
As if I've lived ninety pilgrimages
أنام أم يسمع رب القبه
Does the Lord of the dome sleep or does He hear
طافت أسيماء بالرحال فقد
Usayma wandered with her camel, stirring
فما بقيا علي تركتماني
لا تفرحن فكل وال يعزل
يا أيها السائل عن نحاسي
قوم هواهم وما نهواه مختلف
خلع الملوك وسار تحت لوائه
مدحنا لها روق الشباب فعارضت
كأن بلاد الله وهي عريضة
تسمع الرعد في المخيلة منها
!ذا اقتسم الناس فضل الفخار
المرء يدعو للسلام
سفها عذلت وقلت غير مليم
سما للبون الحارثي سميدع
فأبلغ إن عرضت بني كلاب
جون دجوجي وخرق معسف
فاعرنزمت ثم سارت وهي لاهية
حريما حين لم يمنع حريما
وما صد عني خالد من بقية
فإن تك ذاعر رثت قواها
ما عاتب الحر الكريم كنفسه
ترى الكثير قليلا حين تسأله
إذا هبت رياح أبي عقيل
ألا تسألان المرء ماذا يحاول
ألم تلمم على الدمن الخوالي
لعمري لئن أمسى يزيد بن نهشل
ولئن كبرت لقد عمرت كأنني
ونحن اقتسمنا المال نصفين بيننا
وبنو الديان لا يأتون لا
أقوى وعري واسط فبرام
أتيناك يا خير البرية كلها
يا هرما وأنت أهل عدل
رأيت ابن بدر ذل قومك فاعترف
أتيت أبا هند بهند ومالكا
إن أبان كان حلوا بسرا
إنما يحفظ التقى الأبرار
يذكرني بأربد كل خصم
من كان مني جاهلا أو مغمرا
لن تفنيا خيرات أر
