لقد ذهبت خيرات قوم يسودهم

رفعنا الخموش عن وجوه نسائنا
We unveiled our women’s faces
جزاك الله شرا من عجوز
May God repay you with evil, you old hag,
ألا أبلغ بني عوف بن كعب
Should I convey to the clan of ‘Auf ibn Ka’b
تقول حليلتي لما اشتكينا
My wife said when we complained,
لكالماشي وليس له حذاء
Like one who walks barefoot and has no shoes
تقول لي الضراء لست لواحد
Hard times say to me, you do not belong to one
يا راكبا إما عرضت فبلغن على
O rider, if you meet
ألم تسأل العياف إن كنت صادقا
Did you not ask the augur, if you were truthful
لما رأيت أن مايبتغي القرى
When I saw that the settlements were seeking
تأمل فإن كان البكا رد هالكا
Consider, if weeping brings back the dead,
أحقا أبا زر حديث سمعته
Is it true what I heard, Ab Zarrs
قد وزوزاني مشتدا رقابهما
Their necks have struck me fiercely, stringent;
لعمري لقد أمسى على الأمر سائس
By my life, he has become well-versed in the matter
هل تعرف الدار مذ عامين أو عاما
Do you know the house from two or one year ago
لمن الديار كأنهن سطور
For whom are the abodes that look like written lines
إلا يكن مال يثاب فإنه
Unless there be wealth to be gained, then verily
ألم تر أن ذبيانا وعبسا
Did you not see that Dhubyan and 'Abs
ألا هبت أمامة بعد هدء
Alas Ummama raged after calm
إذا قلت أني آيب أهل بلدة
When I say I yearn for the people of a place
حمدت إلهي أنني لم أجدكما
I praised my God that I did not find you
ماذا تقول لأفراخ بذي مرخ
What can you say to chicks in a barren land
ألست بجاعلي كبني جعيل
Are you not making me like the son of Ju'ayl,
ما أدري إذا لاقيت عمروا
I know not, if I meet Amr
ذهب الذين فراقهم أتوقع
Gone are those whose parting I dreaded
ألا طرقت هند الهنود وصحبتي
How Hind of the Hinds drew near with her party
لم تر عيني مثل عروة خلة
My eyes have never seen the like of Urwah, so stately,
ولست أرى السعادة جمع مال
I do not see happiness in amassing wealth,
فدى لابن بدر ناقتي ونسوعها
My she-camel and her newborn foal I ransom for Ibn Badr's son
وسرب ذعرت بذي ميعة
A swarm startled me near someone of ill intent
يا جفنة ترك ابن هوذة خلفه
O Jafnah left behind by the son of Hawdhah
ستكفيك أمثال المجادل جلة
The arguments of disputants will suffice you
ألا طرقتنا بعدما هجدوا هند
After they migrated from India
وفتيان صدق من عدي عليهم
And youths true of promise from an enemy upon them
أشاقتك ليلى في اللمام وما جزت
Laila yearned for you in seclusion, and did not repay
وطاوي ثلاث عاصب البطن مرمل
Three hungry men with bellies drawn in
شكت العنتريس نصي وإدلا
The knight Antara complained of the fatigue of his she-camel
قلت لها أصبرها صادقا
I told her I'd be patient with her truthfully
وقاتلت الغداة قتال صدق
You fought in the morning with true sincerity
لما رأى أن أرياف القرى منعت
When he saw that the outskirts of villages were forbidden
ألا كل أرماح قصار أذلة
Alas! All short spears are humiliated
لأدماء منها كالسفينة نضجت
With blood like a ship that had boiled
كأن لم تقم أظعان هند بملتوى
As though the griefs of India had not arisen at Multan's winding ways;
أرى العير تحدى بين قو وضارج
I see the caravan defying between a strong and swift one
من يزرع الخير يحصد ما يسر به
Who sows goodness reaps what pleases him
أطوف ما أتوف ثم آوي
I wander as long as I live, then take refuge
أبت شفتاي اليوم إلا تكلما
My lips today refused all but to speak
فما برح الولدان حتى رأيته
The children had scarcely departed when I saw him
لا يبعد الله إذ ودعت أرضهم
Allah does not distance one who bid farewell to their land
وبعض القول ليس له عناج
Some words lack earnestness
وسلم مرتين فقلت مهلا
Twice he bid me peace, and twice I said,
أنخنا ببيت الزبرقان وليتنا
We stopped at the house of Al-Zubairqan while we were in movement
أرسم ديار من حنيدة تعرف
A home of yearning I drew, its roof
إذا ظعنت عنا بجاد فلا دنت
When the maid turns away in dismissal, neither comes near
فلست بمحبو ولا جد مكرم
I am neither a lover nor a serious admirer,
إن اليمامة شر ساكنها
The dove is the worst of those who dwell there
آثرت إدلاجي على ليل حرة
I preferred to spend my night with a free woman,
لنعم الحي حي بني كليب
How excellent is the tribe of Kulayb
يا ليت كل خليل كنت آمله
Oh how I wish every friend I hoped for
نأتك أمامة إلا سؤالا
Ummamah came to you with nothing but questions,
فدى لابن بدر يوم أقدم خيله
In ransom for Ibn Badr the day his horsemen charged,
إن عمروا وما تجشم عمرو
Indeed Amr and what Amr endured
أمن رسم دار مربع ومصيف
A square house with a summer lodge for your eyes
ولقد رأيتك في النساء فسؤتني
I saw you among the women, so you vexed me
كدحت بأظفاري وأعملت معولي
I toiled with my nails and wielded my pickaxe
جاورت آل مقلد فحمدتهم
I dwelt among the hypocrites and praised them,
أتاني وأهلي بذات الدماخ
He came to me and my family with spears
وقعت بعبس ثم أنعمت فيهم
You struck them with a frown, then granted them favor,
لا تجمعا مالي وعرضي باطلا
Do not amass my wealth and honor in vain
يأيها الملك الذي أمست له
O King, to whom Gaza and its plains belong
كيف الهجاء وما تنفك صالحة
How is satire, and never ceasing, ever useful,
أخو ذبيان عبس ثم مالت
The tribes of Dhubyan turned away frowning
يا دار هند عفت إلا أثافيها
O house of Hind, whose traces have vanished
لعمرك ما ذمت لبوني ولا قلت
By your life! My camels never spoke ill of Labun
والله ما معشر لاموا امرأ جنبا
By God, the people did not blame a chaste man
فنحن تلفعنا على عسكريهم
So we descended upon their armies
الحمد لله إني في جوار فتى
Praise be to God! I dwell beside a youth
وما فضلوكم غير أن أباكم
They have no merit over you but that their father
إذا خافك القوم اللئام وجدتهم
If the base people fear you, you'll find them
عرفت منازلا من آل هند
I knew the abodes of the family of Hind
سيري أمام فإن المال يجمعه
Go ahead, for wealth is destined
ألا آل ليلى أزمعوا بقفول
Behold, for Layla's kin made ready to depart
تبينت ما فيه بخفان إنني
I discerned the excellence in him with keen insight; truly, I am a man of sound judgement and quick wit regarding men.
يعيش الندى ما عاش عمرو ابن عامر
The bounty lived as long as ‘Amr son of ‘Aamir lived,
وأعطى ابن قرط غداة السلي
The son of Qurṭ gave generously one morn
أبى لك أباء أبى لك مجدهم
They refused you their nobility, refused you their glory,
جزاك الله شرا من عجوز
يا ندمي على سهم بن عوذ
فالشعر صعب وطويل سلمه
فمن مبلغ حيان عني وعاصما
سالت قرابين بالخيل الجياد لكم
قبح الإله بني بجاد إنهم
قالت أمامة عرسي وهي خالية
إذا ظعنت عنا بجاد فلا دنت
وإن جياد الخيل لا تستفزنا
أذئب القفر أم ذئب أنيس
لحاك الله ثم لحاك حقا
إن الخليط أجدوا البين فانفرقوا
عفا الرس والعلياء من أم مالك
ما يبقك الله لا أختر عليك أخا
قدامة أمسى يعرك الجهل أنفه
أبوك ربيعة الخير ابن قرط
كأن المضلعات علون سلمى
تعذر بعد عهدك من سليمى
سئلت فلم تبخل ولم تعط طائلا
إن اليمامة خير ساكنها
قومي بنو عمرو ابن عو
أتيت ابن شعل بالحشاشة صاديا
شهد الحطيأة يوم يلقى ربه
أعبد ابن يربوع ابن ضرط ابن مازن
رأيت امرأ يسقي سجالا كثيرة
فدى لابن حصن ما أريح فإنه
أدار سليمى بالدوانك فالعرف
لما رأيت أن ما يبتغي القرى
ألا من لقلب عارم النظرات
أفيما خلا من سالف العيش تدكر
يا عام قد كنت ذا باع ومكرمة
عفا توأم من أهله فجلاجله
ألا هبت أمامة بعد هدء
شاقتك أظعان للي
جزى الله خيرا والجزاء بكفه
عفا مسحلان من سليمى فحامره
طافت أمامة بالركبان آونة
