1. Ummamah came to you with nothing but questions,
And you saw in her an imaginary apparition,

2. An apparition that startles you when dreaming,
And refuses to disappear except at dawn.

3. She is a coquettish Kinaaniya, her abode is estrangement,
She finds union and spends union.

4. Like a she-camel from the stout young camels,
Delicate, driving away the gazelles.

5. She eats lush vegetation when it is available,
And browses on herbs and wanderers when not.

6. She summers on an inaccessible summit,
And appears like the ropes of autumn in valleys.

7. Dwelling near, confusing the stags,
The caves poured in her contention.

8. As if at its edges and outskirts,
Men met men for mares.

9. Will a messenger reach you,
The resolute, who do not complain of nightfall?

10. Who unburdens the hyena, jesting,
And drives away ossifrages.

11. When the she-ostriches accompany her,
They quickly tire from traveling.

12. And if she becomes angry, she leaves with the swords -
Grey swords and polished white swords.

13. And her hands lead pebbles,
Commanded by her sinews, then cajoled.

14. She snorts after the commotion of the she-wolves,
As the stallion snorts, then gallops.

She flings pebbles with her wrists

16. When the swooping vultures gather in shade.
And casts rocks with her two palms

17. Well-burnished after being planed.
And a night whose terrors I surpassed

18. To a life I desire, though brief.
I folded its tasks fearing

19. You would believe the gossip about me.

20. With the likes of titles the new moon adorned her
Taking off finery and dashing to finery

21. To a just king whose rule
When we placed before him our bags

22. He saw the words of those who envied me
And those who wished for my misguidance.

23. And an opponent who wished upon me ruin
For the sea of Quray’ flowed copiously.

24. The trustee of the Caliph after the Messenger
And the most loyal of Quraysh in pacts

25. The most generous of them in munificence
And the best of them when deeds were counted

26. A tongue came to me, and I renounced it
And I did not fear that it would be uttered

27. That the slanderers without crime
Came to you, and laid before you the outrageous.

28. So I came to you apologizing, hopeful
For your pardon, fearing your punishment,

29. Do not listen to the words of enemies about me
And do not rely on the gift of men to me

For you are better than the shining celestial bodies

31. More feared in wrath and the best in reward
I seek refuge in your grandfather - I am a man

32. Whose enemies have led me into contention with you
For you are better than the shining celestial bodies

33. Most feared in wrath and most hopeful in reward
Have mercy on me, guided by the King

34. For everything has its proper account
And do not take me for the words of slanderers

35. For every era has its men
And if what they claimed is true
