1. My she-camel and her newborn foal I ransom for Ibn Badr's son,
And he says, “Nay, but my people I ransom for him.”
١. فِدىً لِاِبنِ بَدرٍ ناقَتي وَنُسوعُها
وَقَلَّ لَهُ لا بَل فِداءٌ لَهُ أَهلي
2. It heals and then from behind its healing bitterly burns
The chests of men, so hot it boils.
٢. شَفى وَتَغَلّى مِن وَراءِ شِفائِها
صُدورَ رِجالٍ مِن حَرارَتِها تَغلي
3. It mounts the smooth-backed steeds, nor weak,
Nor shirking from its neighbor is the twisting rope.
٣. سَما بِالجِيادِ الجُردِ لا مُتَخاذِلٌ
وَلا وَهِنٌ عَن جارِهِ مَرِسُ الحَبلِ
4. When on the day the clouds unleashed the morning downpour,
Resembling the legs of locusts with its shower of arrows.
٤. غَداةَ اِستَهَلَّت بِالنِسارِ سَحابَةٌ
تُشَبِّهُها رِجلَ الجَرادِ مِنَ النَبلِ
5. They refused to stand and meet the levelled lances,
And bared Shagar, granting every legged creature death.
٥. أَبَوا أَن يُقيموا لِلرِماحِ وَشَمَّرَت
شَغارِ وَأَعطَوا مُنيَةً كُلَّ ذي رَجلِ
6. So they gained naught on the day the rain poured down,
When our horsemen saw the foemen's weakness.
٦. فَما غَنِموا يَومَ النِسارِ وَلا وَنَت
فَوارِسُنا إِذ أَبصَروا عَورَةَ الرَجلِ
