وأوعد وقل ما شئت إنك جاهل
Make promises and say what you will, you are ignorant
لأسماء رسم أصبح اليوم دارسا
For Asma a drawing has become erased today
فجللتها حصى جنادة غدرة
So I clad it in the armor of treacherous fate
ألم تر أني كرهت الحروب
Did you not see that I hated wars
فأبلغ لديك بني مالك
So convey to the tribe of Malik
مابال عينك فيها عائر سهر
What ails your eyes that wakefulness afflicts them
تعلم بأن القوم ساموك خطة
Learn that the people have plotted against you
إن تك جلمود بصر لا أويسه
If you encounter an obstinate gaze I cannot soften,
تقطع باقي وصل أم مؤمل
The remainder of Umm Maml's affection was severed
على أنني بعد ما قد مضى
Although after what has passed
يا جسر إن الحق بعد حصله
O bridge, verily truth, after attaining it
ألا من مبلغ عني خفافا
Is there anyone to carry my news stealthily
لولا الإله وعبده وليتم
Were it not for God and His servant you would have perished
إني أرى لك أكلا لا يقوم به
Indeed I see you eating in a way
لم تأخذون سلاحه لقتاله
Why do you take his weapon to fight him
جمعت إليه نثرتي ونجيبتي
I gathered my scattered pieces and my nobility
مواليك فأب الضيم إنك مالك
Your patron, so disdain oppression, you're master
ألا ليتني قطعت مني بنانة
Oh, if only I had cut off a branch from myself
مطهما خلقه شثنا سنابكه
His body cloven hoofed, his windows double-glazed,
القائلون إذا لقوا أقرانهم
When they meet their peers, they say:
صبحناهم بألف من سليم
We greeted them with a thousand from Sulaim,
على متن جرداء السراة نبيلة
Upon the bare back of an elegant she-camel,
وإني حاذر أنمي سلاحي
I take care lest I turn my arms
ألا أبلغا عمرا على نأي داره
Shall I inform Amr in his distant home
يا أيها الرجل الذي تهوي به
O you who the willful maidens desire
وإني أتتني عن يسار مقالة
And truly a story came to me from the left,
شهدن مع النبي مسومات
They witnessed with the Prophet pitched battles,
ألا من مبلغ غيلان عني
O messenger, convey to Ghailan from me
ونحن ضربنا الكبش حتى تساقطت
And we struck the ram until its
أراني كلما قاربت قومي
Whenever I approach my people,
هم سودوا هجنا وكل قبيلة
They darkened horses and every tribe
إن كان جارك لم تنفعك ذمته
If your neighbor did no good for you
أبلغ قحافة عنا في ديارهم
Convey to Quhafa in their abodes
ألا هل أتى عرسي مكري وموقفي
Has my wedding night come, oh cunning fate?
سيول الجدية جادت
The streams of generosity have flowed
يا لهفتا من بعد بجلة أصبحوا
Oh longing after the days when they were
يأبى فوارس لا تعرى صواهلها
The knights whose blades are ever bare
رأيتك يا خير البرية كلها
I saw you, O best of all creation
أكليب مالك كل يوم ظالما
Every day, dog of Malik, you act unjustly
أبعد عمار الخير نرجو سلامة
Beyond peace for virtuous Imār we yearn
لعمري لقد أوفى الجواد ابن عاصم
By my life! The generous man, son of 'Asim, has fulfilled his duty,
تبكي على قتلى يهود وقد ترى
You weep for the slain Jews, and you may shed
خفاف ماتزال تجر ذيلا
A shame that still drags its tail
دعي عنك تقوال الضلال كفى بنا
Leave off your words of misguidance, we have had enough
أتاني من الأنباء أن ابن مالك
News reached me that the son of Malik
ترى الرجل النحيف فتزدريه
You see the slender man so you spurn him,
أعددت صوبة والصموت ومارنا
I prepared a riding camel, silent and docile,
فلا تأمنن بالعاذ والخلف بعدها
So do not feel safe from betrayal after protection
وإن تك من سعد العشيرة تلقني
If you are of the fortunate tribe of Qais son of Ailan, my birthplace,
لعمري لقد حكت رحى الحرب بعدما
By my life, the millstone of war has ground
ألا من مبلغ سفيان عني
Oh that some messenger to Sufyan may tell,
أبلغ سراة بني شهاب كلها
Convey to the chiefs of Banu Shihab, all of them
أراك امرأ في ظلم قومك جاهدا
I see you as a man struggling against the injustice of your people,
فأيي ما وأيك كان شرا
So which one of us, and who was more evil,
فديت بنفسه نفسي ومالي
I ransom my soul and wealth with myself
إذا حملت سلاحي فوق مشرفة
When I bear my weapon above a balcony
ألا أيها المهدي لي الشتم ظالما
O Mahdi, why do you unjustly revile me?
فإن يقتل بنو عثمان فيها
If the sons of Uthman are killed therein
قليلة لحم الناظرين يزينها
Her eyes have little flesh, yet youth and lowered life adorn her.
جميع البز تحملني وآة
All gazelles carry me, an eryngium
جزى الله خيرا خيرنا لصديقه
May God reward the best of us well for his friend
وأنت لما ولدت أشرقت الأرض
When you were born
يا دار أسماء بين السفح فالرحب
O house of Asmaa, between the slopes and the vastness
إن تلقني تلق ليثا في عرينته
If you meet a lion in his den,
يا خاتم النبآء إنك مرسل
O seal of the prophets, you are truly sent
كأن صموتا صافت النحل حولها
As though bees had clarified stillness around her,
إذا فرس العوالي لم يخالج
When the enemy horses were unleashed, my worries were nothing but victory and nearing
أصابت العام رعلا غول قومهم
The people were struck this year with the raids of their tribe,
من مبلغ الأقوام أن محمدا
Who will inform the people that Muhammad
نصرنا رسول الله من غضب له
We supported Allah's Messenger against his enemies' wrath,
أبلغ أبا سلمى رسولا يروعه
Convey to Abū Salamah a messenger that alarms him
وكانت نهابا تلافيتها
The raids I made were repaid in kind,
عفا مجدل من أهله فمتالع
Mjdal departed from his people though still young
هجوت صريح الكاهنين وفيكم
You have reviled the priests openly, yet
خفاف ألم تر ما بيننا
Khofaf, have you not seen what lies between us
ألا أبلغا عني ابن جذل
Deliver from me to the son of Jadhl
أبى قومنا إلا الفرار ومن تكن
Our people insisted on fleeing, and whoever
لو أن أهل الدار لم يتصدعوا
If the people of the house had not become divided
أزرة خير أم ثلاثون منكم
لنا عارض كزهاء الصريم
وذاب لعاب الشمس فيه وأزرت
وإني لعند الحرب تحمل شكتي
إذا مات عمرو قلت للخيل أوطئوا
وسرنا كموج البحر تطموا سيوله
أبا خراشة أما كنت ذا نفر
وما روضة من روض حقل تمتعت
ولا زائل أزجي الجياد على الوجى
فَما رامَهُ حَتّى أَتى جارَ بَيتِهِ
واسألوا سيد الفريقين حجرا
كما كان يبغيها كليب بظلمه
إنك لم تك كابن الشريد
ينفك منها ما أقام يلملم
أتوعدني بالصرم إن قلت أوفني
أرب يبول الثعلبان برأسه
أتشحذ أرماحا بأيدي عدونا
ومن قبل آمنا وقد كان قومنا
ما يؤمن المرء الذي بات طاعما
إما تري يا أم فروة خيلنا
في كل عام لنا وفد نجهزهم
ألا من مبلغ عني خفافا
لعمري إني يوم أجعل جاهدا
منا بمكة يوم فتح محمد
جاء كلمع البرق جاش ناظره
