- أبلغ أبا الجارود عني رسالةConvey a message from me to Abu al-Jarud:
- أبلغ حصينا إذا جئتهConvey to Ḥuṣayn, when you come to him,
- أبو بحر أشد الناس مناAbu Bahr is the most bountiful of men
- أبي القلب إلا أم عوف وحبهاMy Heart Yearns Only for Umm 'Awf and Her Love
- أبى الله الا أن للأزد فضلهاGod has ordained that the Azd have their distinction,
- أبى صاحبي بذلي وبيعي كليهماMy companion refused both my giving and my selling.
- أتاني في الضبعاء أوس بن عامرAws ibn ʿĀmir came to me concerning al-Ḍabʿāʾ,
- أتاني في الطيفاء أوس بن عامرAws son of Amir came to me about al-Tayfa’,
- أترجو أمة قتلت حسيناDoes a nation that killed Husayn hope
- أتينا الزبير فدانى الكلامWe came to al-Zubayr, and he softened his speech;
- أحار بن بدر قد وليت ولايةO Har, son of Badr, you have assumed a governorship.
- أحبب إذا أحببت حبا مقارباLove, when you love, with a moderate love,
- إذا أرسلت في أمر رسولاWhen you send a messenger on a matter,
- إذا المشكلات تصدين ليWhen perplexing matters confront me,
- إذا أنت حملت الأمانة فارعهاIf you are entrusted with a trust, safeguard it,
- إذا ضاق صدر المرء عن سر نفسهIf a man's breast is too narrow to hold his own secret,
- إذا كنت تبغي للأمانة حاملاIf you seek a bearer for a trust,
- إذا كنت ذا مال كثير فجد بهIf you have abundant wealth, be generous with it,
- إذا كنت مظلوما فلا تلف راضياIf you are wronged, do not be found content
- إذا كنت مظلوما فلا تلف راضياIf you are wronged, do not be found content
- إذا كنت معتدا خليلا فلا يرقIf you would count someone a friend, let your favor not be won
- إذا كنت معنيا بأمر تريدهIf you are intent upon a matter you desire,
- إذا لم يكن للمرء عقل فإنهIf a man has no intellect, then he—
- إذا ما رأيتم ناشىء الحي منكمIf ever you see one of your clan's young men
- إذا نلت الإمارة فاسم فيهاIf you attain rulership, rise within it
- أرقت وهاجتني الهموم الحواضرI lay awake, and the cares at hand stirred me.
- أرى فتنة قد ألهت الناس عنكمI see turmoil that has distracted the people from you;
- أريت امرء كنت لم أبلهConsider a man I had not yet tested:
- أصلاح أني لا أريدك للصباO Salah, I do not want you for youthful dalliance.
- أظل كئيبا لو تشوكك شوكةI would remain sorrowful if a thorn should prick you,
- أعصيت أمر ذوي النهىYou disobeyed the command of those who forbid
- أعوذ بالله الأعز الأكرمI seek refuge in God, the Mightiest, the Most Generous,
- أفاطم مهلا بعض لومي فإنماAfatim, go slowly with some of my blame, for I
- أفاطم مهلا بعض لومي وأحقاديO Fatima, gently—lessen your blame of me and my rancor.
- أفاطم مهلا بعض هذا التعبسO Fatim, gently now—less of this frowning.
- أفنى الشباب الذي فارقت بهجتهThe youth whose splendor I have left behind was consumed
- أقول لعاذلتي مرةI once said to she who blamed me
- أقول وزادني جزعا وغيظاI say—and it has increased my anguish and fury—
- أكرم صديق أبيك حيث لقيتهHonor your father's friend wherever you meet him.
- ألا أبلغ أبا بحر خليليListen: tell my dear friend Abū Baḥr—
- ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حربLo, tell Muawiya son of Harb:
- ألا ابلغا عني حصينا رسالةListen! You two, convey a message from me to Ḥuṣayn:

- ألا أبلغا عني زيادا رسالةListen, you two: convey a message from me to Ziyad;
- ألا أبلغا عني زيادا مآلكاHo, you two, carry a message from me to Ziyad—
- ألا تلك عرسي أم سكن تنكرتAh, my wife there, Umm Sakan, has changed
- ألا رب نصح يغلق الباب دونهAh, many a word of counsel has the door shut against it,
- ألا يا أبا الجارود هل أنت مخبريAh, Abu al-Jarud, will you tell me
- ألبس عدوك في رفق وفي دعةDeal with your enemy gently and calmly.
- العيش لا عيش إلا ما اقتصدت فإنLife is no life unless you practice moderation; for if
- ألم تر أني أجعل الوأي ذمةHave you not seen that I regard a promise as a binding obligation?
- ألم تر اني والتكرم شيمتيHave you not seen that I—nobility is my nature,
- ألم تر ما بيني وبين ابن عامرHave you not seen what lies between me and Ibn ʿĀmir
- ألم تعلما يا ابني دجاجة أننيDid you two not know, O sons of Dajājah, that I
- المرء يسعى ثم يدرك مجدهA man strives, then attains his glory,
- آليت لا أمشي إلى رب لقحةI swore not to go to the owner of a milch she-camel
- أليس عن حوبائه سخيA brave man, generous with his own life.
- أمفندي في حب آل محمدO you who call me foolish for loving Muhammad’s family,
- أمنت على السر امرء غير حازمI trusted a man lacking prudence with a secret,
- أمير المؤمنين جزيت خيراO Commander of the Faithful, may you be rewarded with good.
- إن امرء نبئته من صديقناIndeed, a man I was told was one of our friends
- أنت الفتى وابن الفتى وأخو الفتىYou are a noble youth, a noble youth’s son, and a noble youth’s brother,
- إنني مجرم وأنت أحق الناسI am indeed at fault, and you are the worthiest of
- أيها الآمل ما ليس لهO you who hope for what is not yours,
- بان الشباب كبين الهالك الموديYouth has departed like the passing of one dead and gone.
- بعني نسيب ولا تهب لي إننيSell to me, Nusayb, and do not give me gifts, for I
- تبدلت من أنس إنهI have replaced Anas, for he
- تجنبنني من بعد شح وغيرةThey shunned me after their possessiveness and jealousy
- تحسس عني أم سكن وأهون الشكاهUmm Sakan seeks news of me; and the easiest
- تروحت من رزداق جي عشيةYou set out from the district of Jayy one evening,
- تعاتبني عرسي على أن أطيعهاMy wife reproaches me to make me obey her.
- تعلم بأني إن أردت صحابتيKnow this about me, if you desire my companionship,
- تعلم يقينا أنني لك ماقتKnow for certain that I loathe you.
- تعودت مس الضر حتى ألفتهI grew accustomed to hardship's touch until I became familiar with it.
- تلبس لي يوم التقينا عويمرʿUwaymir arrayed himself against me the day we met
- جرت بها الريح أذيالا مظاهرةAcross it the wind dragged overlapping skirts,
- جزى الله رب الناس خير جزائهMay God, Lord of humankind, grant His finest reward
- جزى ربه عني عدي بن حاتمMay his Lord repay ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim on my behalf
- حسدوا الفتى إذ لم ينالوا سعيهThey envied the young man when they could not match his striving;
- خذي العفو مني تستديمي مودتيAccept what I can readily give, and you will preserve my affection.
- دعاني أميري كي أفوه بحاجتيMy emir summoned me to speak of my need.
- ذروا آل سلمى ظنتي وتعنتيLeave off, Salma’s kin, suspecting me and finding fault with me,
- ذكرت ابن عباس بباب ابن عامرI remembered Ibn Abbas at the door of Ibn Amir,
- ذهب الرجال المقتدى بفعالهمGone are the men whose deeds were emulated,
- ذهبت وكان المرء يبلو ويبتلىI went—for a man tests and is tested—
- رأيت أبا سهل وما كنت مذنباI saw Abu Sahl—though I had done no wrong
- رأيت زيادا صد عني وردنيI saw Ziyad turn away from me and rebuff me,
- رأيت زيادا يجتويني بشرهI saw Ziyad treating me with spiteful aversion,
- رماني جاري ظالما لي برميهMy neighbor hurled something at me, wronging me with his throw.
- زعم الأمير أبو المغيرة إننيThe emir Abu al-Mughira claimed that I am
- زيد مائت كمد الحبارىZaid has two hundred like the warp threads
- سأشكر عمرا ما تراخت منيتيI shall thank ʿAmr as long as my death is delayed,
- صبغت أمية بالدماء أكفناUmayya stained our palms with blood.
- عد من الرحمن فضلا ونعمةCount it a favor and a blessing from the All-Merciful
- غدا منك في الدنيا الشباب فأسرعاYouth departed from you in this world and sped away,
- غضب الأمير بأن صدقت وربماThe prince was angered that I spoke truthfully
- كساني ولم استكسه فحمدتهHe clothed me without my asking him for clothing, so I thanked him.
- كلا أيما الحيين ألقى فإننيWhichever of the two clans I meet, I am
- كيف بصاحب إن أدن منهWhat can I do with a friend who, if I draw near him,
- لا تحمدن امرء حتى تجربهNever praise a man until you have tested him,
- لا تشعرن النفس يأسا فإنماNever fill your soul with despair, for
- لا يصلح الناس فوضى لا سراة لهمPeople cannot thrive in anarchy, with no leaders.
- لحى الله مولى السوء لا أنت راغبMay God curse the wicked ally! You have no desire
- لست مستبقيا أخا لك لاYou will not keep a brother if you do not
- لست وإن عز الشراب بمفطرI will not, even if drink is scarce, break my fast
- لعمرك ما نصر فلا تحسبنهBy your life, Nasr is not—so do not think him—
- لعمرك ما وجدت ابا عميرBy your life, I have not found Abu ʿUmayr
- لعمرك مرسوع من آل مجالدBy your life, Marsuʿ of the clan of Mujalid,
- لعمري لقد أفشيت يوما فخاننيBy my life, I once confided—and he betrayed me—
- لعمري لقد أوصيت أمس بحاجتيBy my life, yesterday I entrusted my request
- لقد جد في سلمى الشكاة وللذيComplaints over Salma have indeed grown earnest; and surely what
- لكل امرىء شكل من الناس مثلهEvery person has a counterpart among people, one like himself.
- لم أر كالدنيا بها اغتر أهلهاI have seen nothing like this world, by which its people are beguiled,
- لنا جيرة سدوا المجازة بينناWe have neighbors who blocked the passage between us.
- لنا صاحب لا كليل اللسانWe have a companion whose tongue is neither blunt—
- ليت شعري عن خليلي ما الذيWould that I knew, concerning my friend, what it was
- ليتك آذنتني بواحدةIf only you would tell me one thing,
- ما ولدت أمي من القوم عاجزاMy mother bore no weakling among the people,
- ماذا تقولون إن قال النبي لكمWhat will you say if the Prophet says to you:
- مرحبا بالتي تجور عليناWelcome to her who wrongs us,
- من ذا الذي بإخائه وبودهWho is there whose brotherhood and affection
- نبئت أن زيادا ظل يشتمنيI was told that Ziyad kept insulting me;
- نشدتك بالله الذي حول بيتهI adjure you by God, around whose House
- وإذا طلبت من الحوائج حاجةAnd when you seek to have a need fulfilled,
- وإن امرء قد قال في الحق خطةAnd indeed, a man who has stated a position on what is right
- وأهوج ملجاج تصاممت قيلهAnd many a reckless, quarrelsome fool—I feigned deafness to his speech,
- وساجع في فروع الأيك هيجنيAnd a cooing bird in the grove's branches stirred me.
- وشاعر سوء يهضب القول ظالمAnd a wicked, unjust poet poured forth words,
- وصله ما استقام الوصل منهAnd maintain ties with him so long as he maintains them;
- وعوراء أهداها امرؤ من عشيرتيAnd an ugly word a man of my clan sent as a gift
- ولا إرقاصنا خلف المواليNor was our dancing behind the patrons
- ولا أقول لقدر القوم قد غليتNor do I say of the people's pot, “It has boiled,”
- ولائمة لامتك يا فيض في الندىAnd a reproachful woman blamed you, O Fayd, for your generosity;
- وما خصلة قد تذل الرجالNo trait that can bring men low
- وما ساس أمر الناس إلا مجربAnd none governs people's affairs but an experienced man,
- وما طلب المعيشة بالتمنيAnd a livelihood is not gained by wishing;
- يا ابن حنيف قد أتيت فانفرO son of Hanif, you have indeed been assailed; so march forth.
- يا غالبي حسبك من غالبO my conqueror, enough of your conquering!
- يا من بمقتله دهى الدهرO you, through whose slaying Time wrought calamity!
- يا ناعي الدين الذي ينعى التقىO herald of religion's death, who announces piety's demise,
- يدافعني مهران في نقد درهمMahran puts me off over paying a dirham,
- يديرونني عن سالم وأديرهمThey try to turn me away from Salim, and I turn them back.
- يروح بها الماشي لقاءك أو يغدوConvey a message from me to Abu al-Jarud,
- يريد وثاق ناقتي ويعيبهاWathaq wants my she-camel and finds fault with her
- يصيب وما يدري ويخطي وما درىHe errs, not knowing, and oversteps, unwary,
- يعيبونها عندي ولا عيب عندهاThey find fault with her before me, yet she has no flaw,
- يقول الأرذلون بنو قشيرThe basest men, Banu Qushayr, say:
- يقولون نصرانية أم خالدThey say Umm Khalid is a Christian.
- يلومونني في البخل جهلا وضلةThey blame me for stinginess, out of ignorance and error;
