    والقَولُ يُكتَبُ عِندَ اللَهِ والعَمَلُ

    I was told that Ziyad kept insulting me;

    And speech is recorded with God, and deeds as well.

    And I had met Ziyad and then said to him—

    Before that, no messengers had hurried with it—

    How long will you rob me, at every gathering,

    Of my honor, while you can change whenever you wish,

    Making God your guarantor for amends and acknowledging

    That I was wronged, seeking pardon and reproaching yourself?

    وَالغَدرُ بِالمَوثِقِ النِسيانُ وَالعَجَلُ

    Then you turned back, while my soul gave me no assurance;

    And a solemn pledge is betrayed by forgetfulness and haste.

    Every man returns one day to his own nature,

    In every circumstance in which a man is tried.

    Even if he lingers away from it, without forsaking it,

    Then, before long, he returns to it alone.

    When he wishes to abandon it, it holds him back,

    As a long tether holds back a bound beast’s leg.
