أَكرِمhonor صَديقَthe friend of أَبيكَyour father حَيثُwherever لَقيتَهُyou meet him
وَاحبُand bestow الكَرامَةَhonor مَنwhoever بَداtook the initiative فَحَباكَهاthen bestowed it on you
Honor your father's friend wherever you meet him.
Honor your father's friend wherever you meet him,
And bestow honor on whoever first bestowed it on you.
And love nobility in whoever initiates it.
وَاكفِand relieve المُهمَّةَthe trouble مَنwhoever لَوَif انَّكَthat you مَرَّةًonce
نَزَلَتdescended إِلَيكَupon you مُهِمَّةٌa trouble لَكَفاكَهاhe would relieve you of it
And ease the trouble of one who, if ever you
Relieve the one in need, for if you were once,
Were beset by trouble, would relieve you of it.
In need, he would have relieved your need.
وَإِذاand when أَتاكَcome to you بَنوsons of السَبيلِthe road فَأَعطِهِمthen give them
مِنfrom فَضلِthe surplus of نِعمَتِهِhis bounty الَّتيwhich أَعطاكَهاhe gave it to you
And when wayfarers come to you, give them
And if the wayfarer comes to you, give him
From the surplus of his bounty, which he has given you.
From the surplus of the bounty God gave you.
لاdo not تُبدِيَنَّever disclose نَميمَةًmalicious gossip حُدِّثتَهاyou were told it
وَتَحَفَّظَنَّand be on your guard مِنagainst الَّذيthe one who أَنباكَهاtold you of it
Never disclose malicious gossip you have been told,
Do not spread any gossip you have heard,
And be on your guard against the one who told it to you.
And be cautious of what informs you of it.
وَتَرىand you see سَفيهَthe fool of القَومِthe people يَترُكُleaves عِرضَهُhis honor
دَنِساًsullied وَيَمسَحُand wipes نَعلَهُhis sandal وَشِراكَهاand its strap
And you see the fool among the people leave his honor
You will see the ignorant of the people leaving his honor
Sullied, while he wipes his sandal and its strap.
Defiled, yet wiping his shoe and its straps,
خُرقاًout of folly إِذاwhen راضَhe manages الأُمورَaffairs بِنَفسِهِby himself
مِثلَlike العَدوِّan enemy لَهاto them يُريدُhe seeks هَلاكَهاtheir destruction
Foolishly, when he manages affairs himself,
With holes, if he Contents himself with his soul,
Like their enemy, he seeks their ruin.
Like an enemy to it, wanting its demise.
لاdo not تُلقِيَنَّever utter مَقالَةًa statement مَشهورَةًwidely circulated
لاnot تَستَطيعُyou can إِذاonce مَضَتit has gone forth إِدراكَهاto retrieve it
Never utter a statement that spreads abroad,
Do not say something famous,
Which, once gone forth, you cannot retrieve.
You cannot take back once it has passed.
