لاdo not تَحمدَنَّever praise امرءًa man حَتّىuntil تُجَرِّبَهُyou test him
وَلاand do not تَذُمَنَّهُever censure him مِنfrom غَيرِabsence of تَجريبِtesting
Never praise a man until you have tested him,
Do not praise anyone until you test him
and never censure him without testing him.
Nor blame him without testing
فَحَمدُكَfor your praise of المَرءَthe man ماas long as لَمnot تَبلُهُyou have tested him سَرَفٌexcess
وَذَمُّكَand your censure of المَرءَthe man بَعدَafter الحَمدِpraise تَكذيبُself-contradiction
For praising a man before testing him is excessive,
Your praise of a man whom excess has not reached
and censuring him after praise is self-contradiction.
And your blame of a man after praise is a lie
