And many a reckless, quarrelsome fool—I feigned deafness to his speech,

unwilling to hear it, though nothing ailed my hearing.

Had I wished, I would not have turned away before dealing him

a gaping wound upon his nose that would baffle the healer.

For even the tongue's lightest stroke is not

less scarring than hewing with an axe.

And many a man bore a grudge he never showed, except that he

was like one deranged, his soul admitting nothing but whisperings.

I showed him long forbearance, matching his own,

while, unknown to him, my eye and my guards were upon him.

And I have for him, should the seething in his breast erupt,

a pungent mountain herb no sipper ever tries twice.

I selected it from every bitter thing, then set it apart

    for every stubborn, relapsing disease,

as a cure and a decisive resolution: whenever he encounters it,

he faces recovery that leaves you no doubt—or despair.

And many a knave, whose chief provision was people's flesh,

full of foul talk, a whisperer after his scheming—

I left him my flesh and spared his own

for whoever came upon him among the jinn and humans present.

So he strove a little, then turned away, as though

biting solid rocks from the base of a firmly rooted mountain.
