Convey a message from me to Abu al-Jarud,

which a walker bears to meet you, at evening or in the morning.

Let him tell us why you have severed ties, after

you were content and have changed no trait since.

Is it because you gained good fortune I was glad for you to gain

that you grew so hostile I said, 'A tawny lion with a mane'?

    تَمَثَّلتَهُ لي غَيرَ أَنَكَ لا تَعدو

    For your eyes are his eyes, and your voice his voice;

you have taken his form before me, except that you do not charge.

So if you have resolved to sever the ties between us,

the first signs of it have already begun to show.

And whenever a friend's bond grew threadbare

and he turned away from me, I would say, 'It is rain whose loss is felt.'
