وَشاعِرِand a poet سَوءٍevil يَهضِبُpours forth القَولَspeech ظالِمٍunjust
كَماjust as اقتَمَّgathered indiscriminately أَعشىnight-blind مُظلِمَin the darkness of اللَيلِthe night حاطِبُa woodgatherer
And a wicked, unjust poet poured forth words,
as a night-blind woodgatherer gathers indiscriminately in the darkness of night.
عَرَضتُI stood forth لَهُagainst him بَعدَafter الأَناةِforbearance فَرُعتُهُthen I terrified him
بِخَدباءَwith a crushing verse قَدindeed تَرفَضُّfly apart عَنهاaway from it المَجاوِبُthe shields
I confronted him after forbearance, then terrified him
with a crushing verse that sends shields flying apart.
تَنَقَّيتُهاI selected it دُهريَّةًage-old ذاتَpossessing مَصدَقٍproven force
لَهاit has أَثَرٌa mark يَومَon the day of المَغَبَّةِthe aftermath لاحِبُplain
I chose it, age-old and of proven force;
its mark is plain when the consequences unfold.
فَضَضتُI shattered بِهاwith it ماwhat كانَhe had جَمَّعَamassed قَبلهاbefore it
كَماjust as انفَضَّscattered عَنaway from شَمسِthe sun of النَهارِthe day الكَواكِبُthe stars
With it I shattered what he had amassed before it,
as the stars scatter before the sun of day.
