ذَهَبتُI went وَكانَand it was المَرءُa person يَبلوtests وَيُبتَلىand is tested
أُطالِعُI examine ماwhat قالَsaid المِجَرُّal-Mijarr بِنَson of مالِكِMalik
I went—for a man tests and is tested—
to examine what al-Mijarr son of Malik had said.
فَلَمbut not أَرَI saw إِلّاexcept هَيجَthe fury of ريحٍa wind تَقَطَّعَتthat broke apart
أَعاصيرَinto whirlwinds فيin أَرضٍa land سُهوبٍvast and open مَهالِكِperilous
But I saw only the fury of a wind that broke apart
into whirlwinds across a vast, perilous land.
فَلاso no ذَنبَblame ليupon me لَوif كُنتُI were أَضطَرُّI compel ضَيعَتيmy affairs
إِلىto جولِthe rim of رَسٍّa well مِنof حَجاًjudgment مُتَماسِكِfirmly knit
So no blame is mine if I were to drive my affairs
to a well’s rim of firm, coherent judgment.
وَكُنتُand I would إِذاwhenever قَوَّمتُI straightened مِنهُof his طَريقَةًa way
تَصاعَرَhe leaned askew مِثلَlike الحائِطِthe wall المُتَوارِكِsagging sideways
And whenever I straightened one of his ways,
he leaned askew like a wall sagging sideways.
