بانَdeparted الشَبابُyouth كَبَينِlike the departure of الهالِكِone who perished المُوديthe dead
وَعَرَّدَand fled الجَهلُfolly عَنّيfrom me أَيَّwhat a تَعريدِflight
Youth has departed like the passing of one dead and gone.
And folly has fled from me—what a flight!
بِعتُI sold الشَبابَyouth بِشَيبٍfor gray hair بَيعَةًa sale غَبَناًat a loss
ياoh لَكَfor you بَيعاًa sale حَراماًwrongful غَيرَnot مَردودِreversed
I sold youth for gray hair—a losing bargain.
What a wrongful sale, never to be undone!
إِنّيindeed I أُطالِبُهُI seek it فيamong الناسِpeople أَنشُدُهُI ask after it
ياoh حَبَّذاhow dear مِنof مُضَلٍّa lost thing غَيرَnot مَوجودِfound
Indeed, I seek it among people, asking after it.
Ah, how dear that lost thing, never to be found!
أَماdo you not تَرىsee لِمَّتيmy long hair شابَتhas turned gray وَزايَلَهاand left it
نَفجُthe swagger of الصِباyouth وَطِلابُand pursuit of الفِتيَةِthe youths الغيدِthe supple-necked
Do you not see my hair has grayed, deserted by
youth's swagger and the pursuit of graceful youths?
فَقَدfor indeed أَراهاI used to see it كَمِثلِjust like اللَيلِthe night فاحِمَةًcoal-black
وَحفاًthick غُدافِيَّةًraven-black مِثلَlike العَناقيدِgrape clusters
For I once saw it coal-black as the night,
thick and raven-black, like clusters of grapes.

It captivated beauties; some beauty was always
reaching toward it with a long, supple neck.
