إِلى العَلياءِ بِالأَمرِ الوَثيقِ
If you attain rulership, rise within it
If you attain command, then practice goodness
To the heights through sound governance.
Towards the elite with firm authority
وَلاand do not تَكُbe عِندَهاwhile holding it حُلواًsweet فَتُحسىlest you be swallowed

وَلاnor مُرّاًbitter فَتَنشَبlest you stick فيin الحُلوقِthroats
وَلا مُرّاً فَتَنشَب في الحُلوقِ
And do not be sweet in office, lest you be swallowed,
Neither be sweet to be praised
Nor bitter, lest you stick in throats.
Nor bitter to cleave to the throats
فَكُلُّfor every إِمارَةٍrulership إِلّاexcept قَليلاًa few

مُغَيِّرَةَ الصَديقِ عَلى الصَديقِ
For every rulership, with few exceptions,
For every command except a little
Turns friend against friend.
Alters a friend against a friend

And I have found no hidden treasure in a man
And I have never concealed in any man
Like sincere faith or ancient noble lineage.
Like true faith or lineage of old

Those of noble lineage are nobler in character,
Those of noble ancestry are the most honorable confidants
And more steadfast under the burden of obligations.
And the most patient when rights are deprived
