تَعَوَّدتُI grew accustomed مَسَّthe touch of الضَرِّhardship حَتّىuntil أَلِفتُهُI became familiar with it
تَعَوَّدتُ مَسَّ الضَرِّ حَتّى أَلِفتُهُ
وَأَسلَمَنيand handed me over طولُthe duration of البَلاءِaffliction إِلىto الصَبرِpatience
وَأَسلَمَني طولُ البَلاءِ إِلى الصَبرِ
I grew accustomed to hardship's touch until I became familiar with it.
I have become accustomed to the touch of harm, until I made peace with it,
And prolonged affliction handed me over to patience.
And the length of affliction has led me to patience,
وَوَسَّعand broadened صَدريmy breast لِلأَذىfor suffering كَثرَةُthe abundance of الأَذىsuffering
وَوَسَّع صَدري لِلأَذى كَثرَةُ الأَذى
وَكانَand used to قَديماًformerly قَدsometimes يَضيقُgrow tight بِهِbecause of it صَدريmy breast
وَكانَ قَديماً قَد يَضيقُ بِهِ صَدري
And much suffering broadened my breast to bear suffering,
And the frequency of hurt has expanded my chest to bear pain,
Though once my breast would sometimes tighten under it.
When once my chest would be straitened by it,
إِذاif أَناI لَمdo not أَقبَلaccept مِنَfrom الدَهرِtime كُلَّall ماthat which
إِذا أَنا لَم أَقبَل مِنَ الدَهرِ كُلَّ ما
أُلاقيهِI encounter it مِنهُfrom it طالَwill be prolonged عَتَبيmy reproach عَلىagainst الدَهرِtime
أُلاقيهِ مِنهُ طالَ عَتَبي عَلى الدَهرِ
If I do not accept from time all that
If I do not accept from fate all that
I encounter from it, my reproach against time will be prolonged.
I encounter from it, my reproach of fate is prolonged.
