إِذاif ضاقَis too narrow صَدرُthe breast المَرءِof a man عَنfor سِرَّthe secret of نَفسِهِhis own self
فَفاضَand so it overflows فَفيthen in صَدريmy breast لَسِرِّيَfor my secret مُتَّسَعample room
If a man's breast is too narrow to hold his own secret,
When a man's chest is too narrow for his secret thoughts
And it overflows, my breast has ample room for mine.
They overflow into mine, which is capacious enough to hold them
إِذاif فاتَslips away شَيءٌsomething فَاصطَبِرthen be patient لِذهابِهِwith its loss
وَلاand do not تَتبَعَنَّever follow الشيءَthe thing إِنif فاتَكَit eludes you الجَزَعanguish
If something slips away, bear its loss patiently.
When something is gone, be patient over its going
And never follow a thing with anguish if it eludes you.
And do not pursue a thing once it has escaped you, with distress
فَفيfor in اليأسِgiving up hope عَمّاof what فاتَis lost عِزٌّdignity وَراحَةٌand relief
وَفيهِand in it الغِنىwealth والفَقرُand poverty ياO ضافيَabounding in الطَمَعgreed
For in giving up hope of what is lost lie dignity and relief,
In giving up hope of recovering what is lost there is honor and peace
And in it lie wealth and poverty, O you of boundless greed.
Both wealth and poverty lie there, O kindler of greed
إِذاif صاحِباtwo companions وَصلٍin a bond بِحَبلٍon a rope تَجاذَباtug against each other
فَمُلَّthen are worn down قُواهُits strands أُوهِنَis weakened الحَبلُthe rope فَانقَطَعand so it snaps
If two companions, bound together, tug against each other on a rope,
When two friends tug at a rope in contention
Then its strands are worn down; the rope is weakened and snaps.
If one relaxes his grip, the rope goes slack and separates
وَلاand do not تَحفِرَنever dig بِئراًa well تُريدُyou target أَخاًa brother بِهاwith it
فَإِنَّكَfor you indeed فيهاinto it أَنتَyou yourself مِنin دونِهِhis stead تَقَعwill fall
And never dig a well to trap a brother,
And do not dig a well intending harm to a brother
For you yourself will fall into it instead of him.
For it is you, not he, who will fall into it
وَكُلُّand every امرىءٍperson يَبغيtransgresses عَلىagainst الناسِpeople ظالِماًunjustly
تُصِبهُwill strike him عَلىagainst رَغمٍhis will عواقِبُthe consequences of ماwhat صَنَعhe has done
And every man who transgresses unjustly against others
And every man who unjustly seeks ascendancy over people
Will be struck, despite himself, by the consequences of what he has done.
The consequences of what he did will strike him down, despite his resistance
