أَلاListen! أَبلِغاyou two, convey عَنّيfrom me حُصَيناًḤuṣayn رِسالَةًa message
أَلا أَبلِغا عَنّي حُصَيناً رِسالَةً
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you مَردودٌreturned عَليكto you خلالُكاyour ways
فَإِنَّكَ مَردودٌ عَليك خلالُكا
Listen, you two: convey a message from me to Ḥuṣayn:
Should I not send a message to Husain
For your own ways are indeed returned to you,
For you shall surely return the way you came
كَرَدِّlike the return of الأَداةِthe implement المُستَعارَةِborrowed إِنَّنيindeed, I
كَرَدِّ الأَداةِ المُستَعارَةِ إِنَّني
وَصَلتُكَI maintained ties with you حَتّىuntil عادَbecame صَرماًestrangement وِصالُكاyour friendship
وَصَلتُكَ حَتّى عادَ صَرماً وِصالُكا
as a borrowed implement is returned. Indeed, I
Like borrowed tools that must be given back
kept ties with you until your friendship turned to estrangement.
I supported you until your support became useless
وَكُنتَand you would إِذاwhenever مَدَّتextended يَمينُكَyour right hand ذَرعَهاits reach
وَكُنتَ إِذا مَدَّت يَمينُكَ ذَرعَها
لِتَفعَلَto do خَيراًgood تَعتَقِبهاholds it back شِمالُكاyour left hand
لِتَفعَلَ خَيراً تَعتَقِبها شِمالُكا
And whenever your right hand stretched out to its full reach
Whenever you extended your right hand
to do good, your left hand would hold it back.
To do good, your left hand would undo it
لِسانُكَyour tongue مَعسولٌhoneyed وَنَفسُكَand your disposition بَشَّةٌcheerful
لِسانُكَ مَعسولٌ وَنَفسُكَ بَشَّةٌ
وَعِندَand by الثُريّاthe Pleiades مِنfrom صَديقِكَyour friend مالُكاyour wealth
وَعِندَ الثُريّا مِن صَديقِكَ مالُكا
Your tongue is honeyed, and your manner cheerful,
Your tongue is smooth but your soul malicious
yet your wealth lies by the Pleiades, far from your friend.
And with the rich you find your fortune
