    When perplexing matters confront me,

I uncover their true nature through reflection.

And if, in the cloud of sound judgment, there flashes

a dark problem that sight cannot discern,

veiled in the mysteries of affairs,

with sound thought I bring to bear upon it

    يِ أَو كَالحُسامِ البَتّارِ الذَكَر

    a tongue like an Arhabi camel's throat-pouch,

    or like a keen, cleaving sword of hard steel;

and a heart that, when cares settle within it,

rises above them with gleaming pearls.

And I am no unthinking follower among men,

asking this man and that, 'What is the news?'

But I am keen of heart and tongue:

I make plain what lies ahead along with what has passed.
