غَدا مِنكَ في الدُنيا الشَبابُ فَأَسرَعا

غَدا مِنكَ في الدُنيا الشَبابُ فَأَسرَعا

وَكانَ كَجارٍ بانَ مِنكَ فَوَدَّعا

وَكانَ كَجارٍ بانَ مِنكَ فَوَدَّعا

Youth departed from you in this world and sped away,

Youth departed from you in this world, so hasten away,

And was like a neighbor who left you and bade farewell.

And it was like a neighbor who moved out from you, so bid farewell,

فَقُلتُ لَهُ فاِذهَب ذَميماً فَلَيتَني

فَقُلتُ لَهُ فاِذهَب ذَميماً فَلَيتَني

قَتَلتُكَ عِلماً قَبلَ أَن تَتَصَدَّعا

قَتَلتُكَ عِلماً قَبلَ أَن تَتَصَدَّعا

So I said to it: Go in disgrace! If only I

So I said to it, “Go away, O foul one!” If only

Had known you thoroughly before you departed.

I had killed you knowingly before you fell apart.

جَنَيتَ عَلَيَّ الذَنبَ ثُمَّ خَذَلتَني

جَنَيتَ عَلَيَّ الذَنبَ ثُمَّ خَذَلتَني

عَليهِ فَبِئسَ الخَلَّتانِ هُما مَعا

عَليهِ فَبِئسَ الخَلَّتانِ هُما مَعا

You brought sin upon me, then deserted me

You committed a sin against me then abandoned me to it,

With it—how wretched those two traits are together!

So evil are both companions together.

وَكُنتَ سَراباً ماحِصاً إِذ تَرَكتَني

وَكُنتَ سَراباً ماحِصاً إِذ تَرَكتَني

رَهينَةَ ما أَجني مِنَ الشَرِّ أَجمَعا

رَهينَةَ ما أَجني مِنَ الشَرِّ أَجمَعا

And you were a fleeting mirage when you left me

You were a mirage that vanished when you left me

A hostage to all the evil I commit.

A hostage to all the harm I reaped in full.
