أَفنىconsumed الشَبابَyouth الَّذيwhich فارَقتُI parted with بَهجَتَهُits splendor
كَرُّthe recurrence of الجَديدَينِthe ever-renewing two: day and night مِنof آتٍone arriving وَمُنطلِقِand one departing
The youth whose splendor I have left behind was consumed
I have lost the youth whose delight I parted with,
by the cycle of day and night, one arriving, one departing.
How different the new ones are, coming and going!
لَمdid not يَترُكاthe two leave ليَfor me فيthroughout طولِthe length of اِختِلافِهِماtheir alternation
شَيئاًanything أَخافُI fear عَليهِfor it لَذعَةَthe sting of الحَدَقِeyes
Through their long alternation, the two have left me
In all their difference, they left me nothing
nothing for which I fear the sting of envious eyes.
I fear the sharpness of sight would criticize.
قَدindeed كُنتُI used to أَرتاعُtake fright لِلبَيضاءَat the white hair أَنظُرُهاI see it
فيin شَعرِthe hair of رَأسيmy head وَقَدand already أَيقَنتُI was certain بِالبَلقِof graying (mixed black and white)
I used to shudder at a white hair when I saw it
I used to shudder seeing the white in my hair,
in the hair of my head, though I knew it would grow gray.
Now with my head dyed, what gave me joy and grace has left me.
وَالآنand now حينَwhen خَضَبتُI dyed الرأسَthe head فارَقَنيleft me
ماwhat كُنتُI used to أَلتَذُّtake pleasure مِنfrom عَيشيmy life وَمِنand from خُلُقيmy disposition
And now that I have dyed my hair, I have lost
the delight I once took in my life and my disposition.
