عَلى باذَقٍ مِمّا تَقومُ بِهِ السوقُ
I will not, even if drink is scarce, break my fast
Even if the wine is dear to one who fasts,
With bādhaq wine of the kind sold in the market.
I taste what the market offers.
سَأَترُكُI shall leave ماwhat أَخشىI fear عَليَّfor myself أَذاتَهُits harm
سَأَترُكُ ما أَخشى عَليَّ أَذاتَهُ
وَأَشرَبُand I shall drink مِمّاof what تَجمَعُgather النَحلُthe bees والنوقُand the she-camels
وَأَشرَبُ مِمّا تَجمَعُ النَحلُ والنوقُ
I shall leave what I fear may harm me,
I shall leave what I fear will hurt me
And drink of what bees and she-camels gather:
And drink what bees and date-palms produce.
شَرابَينِtwo drinks لاno مَقتٌwrath مِنَfrom اللَهِGod فيهِماin them both

عَليَّ وَلا وَقعٌ مِنَ السَوطِ تَشقيقُ
Two drinks that bring no wrath from God
Two drinks with no sin nor lash's sting for me,
Upon me, nor any skin-splitting stroke of the whip.
No blame from God, no agony from the scourge's blow.
