يُسائِلُ هَل أَسقي من اللَبن الجارا
Indeed, a man I was told was one of our friends
A friend informed me there's a man who asks
Asks whether I give the neighbor milk to drink.
If I’m going to offer my neighbor milk to quaff.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَسقيI certainly give drink الجارَthe neighbor فيin قَعرِthe innermost part of بَيتِهِhis house
وَإِنّي لأَسقي الجارَ في قَعرِ بَيتِهِ
وَبَيتيَand my house ماthat which لاno إِثمَsin فيهِin it وَلاand no عاراshame
وَبَيتيَ ما لا إِثمَ فيهِ وَلا عارا
And I do give the neighbor, deep within his house
I tell my neighbor, drinking in his house’s depths-
And mine, that which holds no sin or shame:
No shame or blame herein- I proffer lawful draughts
شَراباًa drink حَلالاًlawful يَتركُleaves المَرءَa person صاحياًsober
شَراباً حَلالاً يَتركُ المَرءَ صاحياً

وَلا يَتَولّى يَقلِصُ الخَمرَ وَالقارا
A lawful drink that leaves a man sober,
That leave a person wakeful, never inclined
Nor does he turn away, bringing up wine and tar (wording uncertain).
To wine that ruins minds and addicts like a raft.
