وَماand not ساسَgoverned أَمرَthe affairs of الناسِthe people إِلّاexcept مُجَرِّبٌan experienced man
وَما ساسَ أَمرَ الناسِ إِلّا مُجَرِّبٌ
حَليمٌforbearing وَلاnor صافَيتَyou befriended مِثلَthe like of كَريمِa noble man
حَليمٌ وَلا صافَيتَ مِثلَ كَريمِ
And none governs people's affairs but an experienced man,
None can counsel people aright save him who has been tried,
A forbearing one; nor have you befriended the like of a noble man.
Humble, though wise; nor shall any be wise, save he that is kind.
فَماfor no لِحَليمٍfor a forbearing man وَاعِظٌan admonisher مِثلَlike نَفسِهِhimself
فَما لِحَليمٍ وَاعِظٌ مِثلَ نَفسِهِ
وَلاnor لِسَفيهٍfor a fool واعِظٌan admonisher كَحَليمِlike a forbearing man
وَلا لِسَفيهٍ واعِظٌ كَحَليمِ
For a forbearing man has no admonisher like himself,
Let the humble heed the counsels that his own soul gives;
Nor does a fool have an admonisher like a forbearing man.
The proud man has no monitor like humility.
