إِذاif كُنتَyou are مَظلوماًwronged فَلاthen do not تُلفَbe found راضِياًcontent
عَنِwith القَومِthe people حَتّىuntil تَأَخُذَyou obtain النِصفَjustice واِغضبِand be angry
If you are wronged, do not be found content
If you are wronged, do not be satisfied
with the people until you obtain your due; be angry.
With the people until you take half, and get angry.
وَإِنand if كُنتَyou are أَنتَyou yourself الظالِمَthe one wronging القَومَthe people فاِطَّرِحthen cast aside
مَقالَتَهُمtheir words واِشغَبand stir up trouble بِهِمagainst them كُلَّevery مَشغَبِkind of strife
And if you yourself are wronging the people, cast aside
And if you are the wrongdoer of the people, reject
their words, and stir up every kind of trouble against them.
Their words, and make every kind of mischief with them.
وَقارِبand draw near بِذيto one possessing جَهلٍignorance وَباعِدand keep far بِعالِمٍfrom a learned man
جَلوبٍone who brings عَلَيكَagainst you الحَقَّthe truth مِنfrom كُلِّevery مَجلَبِquarter
And draw close to an ignorant man, and keep far from a learned one,
Befriend the ignorant, and avoid the scholar,
who brings the truth against you from every quarter.
Truth is burdensome to you from every burdened one.
فَإِنso if حَدِبواthey bend forward فاقعَسthen lean back وَإِنand if هُمthey تَقاعَسواhang back
ليَستَمكِنواso they may gain control مِمّاof what وَراءَكَis behind you فاحدَبِthen bend forward
So if they bend forward, lean back; and if they hang back
If they are crooked, then be lame, and if they slacken,
to gain control of what lies behind you, then bend forward.
So they feel safe from what is behind you, then be humpbacked.
وَلاand do not تَدعونيcall me لِلجَورِto injustice واِصبِرand be patient عَلىwith الَّتيthat which
بِهاby it كُنتُI used to أَقضيI judge لِلبَعيدِfor a stranger عَلىagainst أَبيmy father
And do not call me to injustice; patiently accept the rule
And do not call me to injustice, and be patient with that
by which I would judge for a stranger against my father.
With which I was judging for the distant one over my father.
فَإِنّيfor I am امرءٌa man أَخشىI fear إِلَهيmy God وَأَتَّقيand I am wary of
مَعاديmy final return وَقَدand indeed جَرَّبتُI have experienced ماwhat لَمnot تُجَرِّبِyou have experienced
For I am a man who fears my God and is wary of
For I am a man who fears his God and fears
my final return; and I have indeed experienced what you have not.
His threats, and I have experienced what you have not experienced.
