I seek refuge in Allah, imam of the age

In that plain it flowed

Where longing hearts once walked
اقنع من الدنيا بما
Be content with what this life affords,
سرحت في حسن فرساي النواظر وال
My dream takes flight on wings of hope
أنا مثلما شئت وشاء دلالك
As you wish and as your affection desires
فؤاد ما تعداكم
A heart that can't forget you
إن أصبحت بيروت دار مدارس
If Beirut became a house of schools
أشعة نسجت من عنصر الزور
Rays woven from the element of falsehood
قالوا فلان راح يكذب دائما

الرقة البيضاء تشكو ولا
The white tenderness complains though
ما كان ذنبي يا أعز الناس
What was my sin, O dearest of all
أهي الجنة التي وعد الله
Is this the Paradise that Allah promised
ان المؤذن في دمشق مؤرقي
The muezzin in Damascus disturbs me
سلام على شيخ المشايخ أحمد
Peace be upon Sheikh of sheikhs Ahmad
معهن سارت بعض روحي فاذكري
With them some of my soul went along, so remember
قد تركنا احب أرض لدينا
We left the land we loved most
خفف الوطء ان مررت علينا
Tread lightly if you pass by us
من أسرة الغنام ذات صيانة
From a flock of sheep, well kept,
كم كشف العلم لأهل النهى
How much has science revealed to the people of ambition
ناظم الفضل النا قد غدونا
We have become orphans, O Nadhim
ما كنت أدري قبل يوم فراقكم
I did not know before the day we parted
فتنت محاسنها العباد فإن بدت
Her beauty has enchanted people, for if she appears
نوابنا لما بنا
Our representatives, when they
من رأيت به الاداب في رجل
When I saw in a man good manners and politeness
وذات حسن وقدر
With such beauty and grace
لئن كنت قد اصبحت بالبعد قانعا
Though you've grown content with distance,
تهتز الأرض ولا تفع
The earth trembles but does no harm,
أما في الحمى ضوء لمن جنه الليل
In fever is there light for one whose night is bleak?
لا تقل عجزا فأنت المعجز
Do not say you cannot, for you are a miracle
صراع السيف والقلم
The struggle of sword and pen
لله ما أسعدني سيدتي
My God, how happy you made me, my lady
وحقك ايزابيل ما أنا هاجع
And by your right, Isabel, I am not returning
قد هيجت وجدي لبسط العتاب
My passion was stirred by the unfolding of reproach,
أجري ومن فرط سرو
I run and from excess joy
إن كان بعض الشعر غير سديد
If some poetry is not sound
اشرح الصدر للمحاسن طرا
Open your heart to beauty's allure,
يا رسولي اذهبا فأبلغاها
O my messengers, go and tell her
اعدل إذا قومت ملكا ولا
If you become a king, be just.
عفوت حتى لا أريد العتاب
I forgave so that I would not want reproach
في إثر سعيد يا أسعد
After Sa'eed, O most fortunate one
أنا وحق ولائك وعهد وفائك
I have been true to my allegiance and pact with you,
أمعروف قد واسيت قلب المتيم
I knew you would comfort the heart of the lover
في الشام دار الكتب مجد لنا
In Damascus, the abode of books, glory for us
يا حبيبي انت لي كل المراد
My beloved, you are all I desire
يا إمام القريض والنثر يا من
O master of prose and verse, O you
بحق من يا منيتي
By the right of the one, O my wish
قد احتكروا الحكومة واستبدوا
They have monopolized the government and become tyrannical
إلى وجهك الوضاح يشتاق مغرم
To your radiant face, a lover yearns,
زرت لندن ربة المدن والشمس
I visited London, mistress of cities and suns
نعم ذاك وجد الصب لا وجد دونه
Yes, that youth found no solace but her
ظبي تهاب الأسد موقف طعنه
The gazelle fears the lion though his stance wounds
يا كرم الناس عهدا
O friend of people, promise
لك في ذا الحمى محب قديم
You have in this fever an old lover
أما لقربك بعد الهجر ميعاد
Though your return after estrangement is near
يا حزينا يقضي الحياة كئيبا
O sad one who spends life depressed
عيسى بنطق المدح حتى لو أنه
Even if Eisa were to speak praise,
كل من فوق هذه الأرض يفنى
All that is upon this earth will perish
نظمت لي دررا أم صغت لي ذهبا
You have strung for me pearls, or have you forged for me gold?
تحت الجبال خمائل وغياض
Beneath the mountains are lush meadows,
في بعلبك جنة الخوام
In Baalbek is the garden of dreams
إن كنت عزمت على الصرع
إذا ما أمور الورى اعضلت
مثلكم فوق هذه الأرض كنا
قد كافأوني بشر
إن الحبيب الذي لسنا نسميه
فتنت محاسنها العبد فإن بدت
أصحابنا في مصر قد ضيعوا
لنا صديق ان رأى
أهلا بطلعة وجهك المحبوب
شغلتني حوادث الدهر عنكم
رسومنا تفنى واجسامنا
بالله يا نسمات الرند والبان
إن أيامنا التي قدم العهد
لله في ذا الخلق أح
يا عشير الصبا الكريم السجيه

بعد خلق الأكوان خلقا بديعا
برزت في مظهر الحسن لنا
لله رب العرش والأكوان
غادة بين يديها مهجتي

لو كنت في دعوى المحبة صادقا
تقول غدا هل تدري ما يلد الغد
سادت بهذا الكون حكمة قاهر
نوابنا نوائب كلهم
أشمة نسجت من معدن النور
نجم بدا فأضاء الشرق ثم هوى
دمت يا فارس الخطب
إن شئت أن ترفعيني فوق كل بني
مذ تفردت بالكمال وأصبح
قد كان ذا الأحمق اللئيم قذى
