35. You have witnessed the oppression
That has spread over us

36. This is your day to deter
Their tremendous sin

37. Soothe them with justification
And reasoning, well taken

38. Threaten them with condemnation
And warning, O you of integrity

39. But they returned with glorification
And thanks, not sullen

40. Can a promise or threat
Hold back an upright army?

41. Can a warning restrain
The flood of rage and bitterness?

42. Can vengeance withhold one
Like me or my offspring?

43. So they tasted the slaying
Due reward for their betrayal

44. With undifferentiated bombardment
And inseparable blows

45. They cried, "Oh the horror of fate
That has brought us to doom

46. Where are the covenants of nations?
Where are our towering hopes?

47. Where are the castles of aspirations
We built upon the peaks?

48. Where is justice, will it resurrect

Truth between destruction and ruin?

Nay, O anguish of pain
