1. I knew you would comfort the heart of the lover
And heal a wound that tore open the chest of Maryam

2. I entrusted you, O Lord of eloquence, to compose
Necklaces of pearls, nothing greater

3. And a residence of miracles of rhetoric and proof
So here you are, a remedy without need of ointment

4. You recognized where the sickness was from her own soul
So you healed every wound in it with balm

5. And if you did not raise her husband from the grave
You are not Jesus to say to him "Rise!"

6. But all the sons of widows
Are ransomed by you today, most generous of men

7. And they were not alone in this, but everyone who belongs
To Jesus will ransom you tomorrow, O best of Muslims!

8. You pronounced words "Heal your own rational soul"
My noble father did not grant words of blame

9. And you stood with an excuse no man can refute
Saying "the people's misguidance led to blood"

10. So they rose in the disgrace of pillage and murder and slandered
The faith by making the unlawful lawful

11. Misguidance from which religion is absolved, though one
Who champions it belongs to ignorance and unbelief

12. You came to Maryam with an excuse, and none
Other than you came with an excuse, unprompted

13. You erred, and the guardian came with the like of what
You brought, though virtue is for the first

14. Yes, O guardian of the faith, you were first
With an excuse, as if you were the first offender

15. Far be it from you, O pillar of nobility and restraint
From sin! But such is the perfection of nobility

16. For both of you, O eminent one of a nation which has
An ancient intercessor in grave misguidance

17. If the intimate sins in ignorance
In every word from you is the blood money for blood
