- أبقى لنا حدث الحروب بقيةThe upheavals of war have left us a remnant
- أبلغ قريشا وخير القول أصدقهTell Quraysh—and the best speech is the truest,
- أتحسب أولاد اللقيطة أنناDo the foundling woman's sons think that we
- إذا قصرت أسيافنا كان وصلهاWhen our swords fall short, their extension is
- إذا ما كنفنا هولها جاء هولهاWhenever we encompass its terror, its terror comes.
- أقاتل حتى لا أرى لي مقاتلاI fight until I see no one to fight me.
- أقمنا على المرس البريع ليالياWe stayed at lofty al-Mars for nights,
- ألا ابلغ قريشا على نآيهاHear this: tell Quraysh, though far away:
- ألا أبلغا فهرا على نأي دارهاListen! You two, tell Fihr, though her dwelling is far away—
- ألا انعي النبي إلى العالميناLo, I announce the Prophet's death to the worlds,
- ألا أيها السائلي عن عشرتيListen, O you who ask me about my clan:
- ألا هل أتى غسان عنا ودونهمHas word of us reached Ghassan, though between them and us
- ألا هل أتى غسان في نأي دارهاLo, has news reached Ghassan in its far-off home—
- الحمد لله الذي قد شرفاPraise be to God, who has honored
- الله أكرمنا بنصر نبيناGod honored us through our support of our Prophet.
- إن الخيال من الحسناء قد طرقاIndeed, the fair one's apparition came by night.
- أنفق وأخلف ولا تكسب بمأثمةSpend and replenish, and do not earn through sin
- إنك عمر أبيك الكريمIndeed, by the life of your noble father,
- أيا عين جودي ولا تبخليO eye, be generous, and do not be stingy
- إياكم أن يظلموا أو تناصراBeware lest they commit injustice, or you lend support
- بكت عيني وحق لها بكاهاMy eye wept, and rightly did it weep,
- بمذربات بالأكف نواهلWith keen-edged weapons in the hands, drinking their fill,
- تركتم جاركم لبني سليمYou abandoned your neighbor to Banū Sulaym,
- تعلم رسول الله أنك مدركيKnow, O Messenger of God, that you will overtake me,
- تلهف أم المسبحين علىUmm al-Musabbiḥīn laments over
- تمنى كتاب الله أول ليلهHe recited the Book of God at the beginning of his night;
- سائل قريشا غداة السفح من أحدAsk Quraysh about the morning by Uhud’s slope—
- سقتم كنانة جهلا من سفاهتكمYou drove Kinana in ignorance, out of your folly,
- صفية قومي ولا تعجزيSafiyya, rise and do not falter.
- طرقت همومك فالرقاد مسهدYour cares came by night, and sleep is restless.
- طعنا طعنة حمراء فيهمWe dealt them a blood-red thrust;
- عجبت لأمر الله والله قادرI marveled at God's decree, and God has power
- على حين أن قالت لأيمن أمهAt the time when Ayman’s mother said to him:
- فأسأل الناس لا أبا لك عناSo ask the people about us—may you have no father—
- فإن أمسي قد أنكرت جسمي وقوتيSo if I have come to find my body and my strength unfamiliar,
- فإن يك موسى كلم الله جهرةSo if God spoke openly to Moses
- فكف يديه ثم أغلق بابهSo he held back his hands, then shut his door,
- فكفى بنا فضلا على من غيرناSo it is distinction enough for us above others
- فلا تتهدد بالوعيد سفاهةSo do not foolishly issue threats;
- فلا وأبيك ما بين واسطNo, by your father, none between Wāsiṭ
- فلو حلتم من دونه لم يزل لكمSo, had you stood in his defense, you would have retained
- فلولا ابنة العبسي لم تلق ناقتيHad it not been for al-ʿAbsī’s daughter, my she-camel would not have suffered
- قضينا من تهامة كل ريبWe put an end to every menace in Tihamah,
- لعمر أبيكما يا ابني لؤيBy the life of your two fathers, O sons of Lu'ayy
- لعمري لقد حكت رحى الحرب بعدماBy my life, war's millstone has ground down—after
- لقد خزيت بغدرتها الحبورThe rabbis have indeed been disgraced by their treachery.
- لقد طارت شعاعا كل وجهIndeed, it has flown to pieces in every direction—
- لقد عجبت لقوم أسلموا بعد عزهمIndeed, I have marveled at a people who, after enjoying honor, abandoned
- لقد علم الأحزاب حين تألبواThe confederates knew well, when they banded together
- لم إلاله به شعثا ورم بهGod gathered what was scattered through him, and through him mended
- لم يغذها قد ولا نصيفNeither a skinful nor half a measure nourished her;
- لو أن بني لحيان كانوا تناظرواIf the sons of Lihyan had waited,
- ما بال هم عميد بات يطرقنيWhat is this crushing sorrow that visits me through the night
- معاذ الله من عمل خبيثI seek refuge in God from a wicked deed,
- من سره ضرب يمعمع بعضهWhoever delights in blows, some crashing against
- من مبلغ الأنصار عني آيةWho will convey a message from me to the Ansar—
- من يفعل الحسنات الله يشكرهاWhoever does good deeds, God rewards those deeds.
- نام العيون ودمع عينك يهملEyes have fallen asleep, while tears from your eye stream,
- نشجت وهل لك من منشجYou yearned, but do you have a yearner?
- نصرنا فما تلقى لنا من كتيبةWe were granted victory; you will encounter no battalion of ours
- وأغضوا عن الفحشاء لا تعرضوا لهاAnd avert your eyes from indecency; do not expose yourselves to it.
- وباكية حراء تحزن بالبكاAnd a weeping woman at Hira grieves in tears,
- وسائلة تسائل ما لقيناAnd a woman asks what we encountered;
- وغسان أصلي وهم معقليAnd Ghassan is my root, and they are my stronghold.
- ولما رأيت الود ليس بنافعيAnd when I saw that affection did not avail me
- ولولا بنوها حولها لخبطتهاAnd were it not for her sons around her, I would have mounted her,
- ونحن وردنا خيبرا وفروضهAnd we reached Khaybar and its approaches,
- يا عيني فابكي بدمع ذرىO my eye, weep streaming tears
- يا للرجال لأمر هاج لي حزنO men, come to my aid over a matter that has stirred sorrow in me!
- يا للرجال للبك المخطوفO men, come to the aid of your mind, snatched away,
