أَلاَHear this! ابْلِغْconvey to قُرَيْشاًQuraysh علىdespite نَآيِهَاtheir remoteness
اتفخَرُdo you boast مِنَّاover us بماof what لَمْdid not تَلِيyou undertake
Hear this: tell Quraysh, though far away:
Deliver to Quraysh the tidings of their fate,
Do you boast over us of what you had no hand in?
Of which they proudly boast without cause.
فَخَرْتُمْyou boasted بِقَتْلَىover slain men أَصَابَتْهُمُcame upon them
فَوَاضِلُabundant favors مِنْfrom نِعَمِthe blessings of المُفضِلِthe Bestower
You boasted over slain men who received
You have fallen by the death of those
Abundant blessings from the Bestower.
Whom arrows of destiny did pierce.
فحَلُّواso they settled جِنَاناًgardens وأبقُواand they left behind لَكُمْfor you
أُسُوداًlions تُحَاميthat defend عَنِin defense of الأشْبُلِthe lion cubs
So they settled in gardens and left for you
So they left you ample plains and fled,
Lions that defend the cubs.
Leaving behind young lions that defend their cubs,
تُقَاتِلُthey fight عَنْfor دِينِهَاtheir faith وَسْطَهَاin their midst
نَبِيٌّa prophet عَنِfrom الحقِّthe truth لَمْdid not يَنكُلِdraw back
They fight for their faith; in their midst
Battling for their faith in the midst of the fray,
Is a prophet who did not draw back from the truth.
A prophet who never wavered from the right path.
رَمَتْهُpelted him مَعَدٌّMaʿadd بِعَوْرِwith the vileness of الكَلاَمِspeech
ونَبْلِand the arrows of العَدَاوَةِenmity لاnot تَأْثَليyou prosper (as written)
Maʿadd pelted him with vile speech
Wounded by the arrow of calumny,
And arrows of enmity—may you not prosper!
By the venom of enmity that knows no surcease.
